Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about your fellowship training in microsurgery. Which procedures can you do on your own today, and which would you want a partner for early on?

What they are checking: Whether they know the honest limits of their skills, which matters for patient safety in a new practice.

Infertility can be a hard topic for men to talk about. How do you make the visit feel safe enough that they tell you the whole story?

What they are checking: Whether they get honest histories about sexual function, substance use and testosterone use that shape the diagnosis.

How do you teach a resident to do a microsurgical case when the margin for error is so small?

What they are checking: Whether they can hand over real responsibility to learners while protecting outcomes in delicate surgery.

What research question in male infertility would you want to pursue here, and what would you need to get it started?

What they are checking: Whether they have a concrete academic direction that fits advancing the field, not just a wish to publish.

What would you do

How do you build a working relationship with the reproductive endocrinologists so couples don't feel bounced between two clinics?

What they are checking: Whether they can coordinate care with a partner specialty that sees the same couple from a different angle.

A young man is about to start chemotherapy and has never thought about fertility. How do you handle that conversation and the sperm banking logistics in a short window?

What they are checking: Whether they can move fast and stay sensitive when a fertility decision has to happen within days.

Many fertility treatments are not covered by insurance. How do you factor cost into what you recommend?

What they are checking: Whether they can be frank about out-of-pocket costs and still offer the plan most likely to work.

About the work

Walk me through how you work up a man with azoospermia, from the first visit to a decision about sperm retrieval.

What they are checking: Whether their diagnostic approach is orderly and separates obstructive from non-obstructive causes before choosing a procedure.

When do you recommend microsurgical varicocelectomy, and when do you tell a couple to go straight to IVF?

What they are checking: Whether they weigh the female partner's age and timeline instead of treating the man's findings in isolation.

A patient has been taking testosterone from an online clinic and now wants children. What do you tell him and what's your plan?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how exogenous testosterone suppresses spermatogenesis and can guide recovery without lecturing.

Part of this job is also general urology. What other urologic conditions are you comfortable covering, including call?

What they are checking: Whether they can carry their share of the broader department and not only their niche.
