Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about the most complex piece of production equipment you've troubleshot and repaired. How did you find the root cause?
What they are checking: Their diagnostic method on hard problems, and whether they find the real cause instead of swapping parts until it runs.
Have you been part of moving or modifying a piece of equipment? What did you have to plan for?
What they are checking: Experience with equipment relocations and modifications, including rigging, utilities, safety and getting it running again.
This role helps develop other maintenance team members. Tell me about a time you taught a less experienced tech something.
What they are checking: Whether they share knowledge patiently, since part of a Level II job is building up the people around them.
How do you document a repair so the next tech on another shift knows what happened?
What they are checking: Whether they write clear work order notes, because good handoffs across shifts prevent repeat troubleshooting.
What would you do
A machine on the extrusion or fabrication line stops with no fault code and production is waiting. How do you approach it?
What they are checking: Whether they work systematically under pressure, checking power, controls, mechanical and hydraulics in a logical order.
Production wants you to get a machine running fast, and you think a part is close to failing. How do you handle that conversation?
What they are checking: Whether they can balance uptime against reliability and explain the risk clearly to production leaders.
About the work
Walk me through your lockout/tagout process before you put your hands inside a machine.
What they are checking: Whether they treat LOTO as a non-negotiable routine, including verifying zero energy, not just hanging a lock.
How strong are you with electrical troubleshooting? Tell me about reading a ladder diagram or working with a PLC.
What they are checking: How deep their electrical and controls skills go, which separates a Technician II from someone who mainly does mechanical work.
What makes a preventive maintenance program actually prevent breakdowns, rather than just being paperwork?
What they are checking: Whether they understand PM as reducing downtime and catching wear early, and take the inspection part seriously.
How comfortable are you with hydraulics and pneumatics? Give me an example of a problem you solved in one of those systems.
What they are checking: Hands-on depth in fluid power, which runs much of the equipment in a metals fabrication and finishing plant.
