Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

What types of repairs are you most comfortable doing on your own: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting or HVAC?

What they are checking: Whether their skill range fits a general hotel maintenance role and they are honest about gaps.

How do you behave when you have to enter a guest's room to make a repair while they are there?

What they are checking: Whether they treat guests respectfully and keep a professional, clean presence in occupied rooms.

Tell me about a time you fixed something that kept breaking and solved it for good.

What they are checking: Whether they look for root causes instead of applying the same quick fix over and over.

How do you keep track of work orders and parts so nothing gets forgotten?

What they are checking: Whether they are organized enough to close out requests and keep inventory of supplies.

What would you do

You have a toilet backing up in an occupied room, a pool chemical check due and a light out in the lobby. How do you prioritize?

What they are checking: Whether they put guest impact and safety first and communicate with the front desk about timing.

A repair is beyond what you can safely do. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they know their limits and escalate to the manager or an outside contractor instead of guessing.

About the work

A guest calls the front desk saying their room's PTAC unit is blowing warm air. Walk me through how you troubleshoot it.

What they are checking: Whether they can diagnose common hotel HVAC issues quickly and logically.

What preventive maintenance would you do on guest rooms to stop problems before guests find them?

What they are checking: Whether they think ahead with room inspections and routine checks instead of only reacting to calls.

Have you maintained a pool or spa? What chemical levels do you check and why?

What they are checking: Whether they understand pool safety and water chemistry, which many hotels require of maintenance.

What safety steps do you take before working on anything electrical?

What they are checking: Whether they shut off power and verify it is dead before starting, rather than taking chances.
