Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about the hardest electrical problem you've diagnosed on a piece of industrial equipment. How did you find it?

What they are checking: Whether they can read schematics and use a meter to trace a fault, which separates a skilled tech from a parts changer.

Tell me about a repeat breakdown you fixed for good instead of just patching it again.

What they are checking: Whether they look for root cause and push for a lasting fix rather than collecting the same work order over and over.

How do you feel about preventive maintenance work when nothing is broken? Give me an example of a PM that caught a problem early.

What they are checking: Whether they take PMs seriously, because skipped preventive work is what turns into emergency downtime.

What would you do

Two machines go down at the same time and both supervisors want you first. How do you decide?

What they are checking: Whether they can prioritize by production impact and safety and explain that choice calmly to both people.

An operator is pressuring you to get the machine running before you're sure it's safe. What do you say?

What they are checking: Whether they hold the line on safety under production pressure while still treating the operator with respect.

About the work

A production line goes down and the operators say it just stopped. Walk me through how you start troubleshooting.

What they are checking: Whether they follow a logical diagnostic path instead of swapping parts until something works.

How do you troubleshoot a pneumatic cylinder that's moving slowly or not holding position?

What they are checking: Whether they understand air supply, valves, seals and regulators well enough to isolate the real cause.

What are the common causes of a hydraulic system running hot or losing pressure, and how would you check each one?

What they are checking: Whether their hydraulic knowledge goes deeper than topping off fluid and covers pumps, relief valves and leaks.

Walk me through your lockout/tagout process before you put your hands into a machine.

What they are checking: Whether they treat energy isolation, including stored pneumatic and hydraulic energy, as non-negotiable every single time.

This role also covers building systems, not just production equipment. What experience do you have with things like HVAC, compressors or plant utilities?

What they are checking: Whether they can support the facility itself, since a failed compressor or air handler can stop the whole plant.

After a repair, what do you document, and why does it matter to the next tech?

What they are checking: Whether they leave a clear record so the next person can diagnose faster and patterns in failures can be spotted.
