Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about an automated test system you designed. What did it test and what were the key design decisions?

What they are checking: Real ownership of test-fixture design from requirements to deployment, which is the core of this role.

How do you work with controls engineers so your mechanical design and their software come together cleanly?

What they are checking: Cross-discipline coordination that avoids surprises at integration.

Tell me about a design of yours that failed in testing or use. What did you learn?

What they are checking: Honest reflection on mistakes and how they changed their design approach.

What would you do

NPD asks for a fixture to run a cordless tool through thousands of cycles. How do you define requirements before you start designing?

What they are checking: Whether they nail down loads, cycles, safety and data needs before jumping into CAD.

Your project is behind and the lab needs the system for a product launch test. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they recognize schedule risk early and raise it with options instead of hoping to catch up.

How do you document a test system so labs in other countries can build or run it?

What they are checking: Whether they think about global deployment, which this group supports across several labs.

About the work

How do you size a motor or actuator to load a tool under test?

What they are checking: Engineering fundamentals for choosing drives, brakes or dynos that can apply realistic loads.

What guarding and safety features do you build into automated test equipment?

What they are checking: Awareness that lab techs work around these machines and safety cannot be added as an afterthought.

How do you design a fixture that can handle several tool models instead of just one?

What they are checking: Thinking about reuse and flexibility across many product lines in a busy lab.

How do you decide between buying a commercial component and designing a custom part?

What they are checking: Practical cost, lead time and reliability tradeoffs in machine design.
