Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you found an error in an invoice or a data set that others had missed. What did you do?
What they are checking: Attention to detail paired with the judgment to raise a problem tactfully with the people who own it.
Describe a report or presentation you made that changed a decision. How did you decide what to leave out?
What they are checking: Whether they shape analysis for a busy decision maker rather than dumping every number they have.
Much of this work follows documented procedures. Tell me about a time a procedure didn't fit the situation in front of you.
What they are checking: Whether they know when to ask for guidance versus improvise, which matters in a precedent-driven role.
What would you do
An attorney keeps approving invoices that break our billing guidelines. How would you handle that?
What they are checking: Whether they can enforce a policy with senior lawyers without damaging the working relationship.
Leadership asks why legal spend went up 15 percent this quarter. How would you go about answering that?
What they are checking: Whether they break a variance into drivers like volume, rates and specific matters before offering an explanation.
About the work
Walk me through how you'd build a dashboard showing outside counsel spend by firm and matter type for the General Counsel.
What they are checking: Whether they know which spend cuts leadership actually acts on, not just how to make a chart.
A law firm proposes a fixed-fee arrangement for a group of employment matters. How would you model whether that saves us money compared to hourly billing?
What they are checking: Whether they can compare an alternative fee arrangement against realistic hourly history instead of guessing at savings.
How would you set up a rate benchmarking comparison across our panel firms when partner titles and seniority mean different things at each firm?
What they are checking: Whether they normalize messy data before comparing it, so a negotiation is not built on apples and oranges.
What e-billing or matter management systems have you worked in, and what did you do to keep the data in them clean?
What they are checking: Whether they treat data hygiene as daily work, since every report depends on matters being coded correctly.
How would you evaluate a prompt pay discount or a volume discount offered by a firm? What would make you say it is not worth it?
What they are checking: Basic financial reasoning about discounts, including the cash flow and volume assumptions hidden behind them.
How do you track outside counsel performance beyond cost? What would you measure?
What they are checking: Whether they understand that value includes outcomes, budget accuracy and responsiveness, not only the lowest rate.
