Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This program rotates you through middle and back-office teams like Global Trading Operations, Treasury and Business Management. Which rotation interests you most, and why?

What they are checking: Whether they understand what these teams do and have thought about where they fit.

The posting is clear this is not a trading or quant role. Why do you want to work in the middle and back office at a trading firm?

What they are checking: Genuine interest in operations and support functions rather than seeing this as a backdoor to trading.

Tell me about a time you got feedback that was hard to hear. What did you do with it?

What they are checking: Responding constructively to feedback, which the posting names as an expectation.

Describe a situation where you analyzed a problem and proposed a solution others adopted.

What they are checking: Analytical problem solving that leads to action, which the program expects in each rotation.

Where do you hope to land after the program, and how flexible are you if the business needs you elsewhere?

What they are checking: Clear goals balanced with openness, since final placement depends on both interests and business needs.

What would you do

You join a new rotation and nobody has time to train you this week. How do you get up to speed?

What they are checking: Initiative and resourcefulness when dropped into an unfamiliar team.

How would you build strong relationships with your cohort while also delivering in your rotation?

What they are checking: Balancing community and teamwork with individual results in a cohort-based program.

A spreadsheet you inherited has numbers that don't tie out. What do you do?

What they are checking: Attention to detail and the instinct to investigate before passing along data.

About the work

In your own words, what does a treasury team at a trading firm need to worry about each day?

What they are checking: Basic understanding of cash, funding and margin, which shows market fundamentals.

Walk me through what happens to a trade after it's executed, as best you understand it.

What they are checking: Basic grasp of the trade lifecycle, which ties together many of the program's teams.

Our formula for success is to hire exceptional people, encourage their ideas and reward their results. As a participant in our yearlong middle and back-office rotation program, referred to internally as our  Leadership Rotation Network (LRN), you’ll begin your journey with our immersive onboarding experience. This will reinforce your knowledge of market fundamentals, equipping you for the dynamic rotations that follow. Additionally, it offers an invaluable opportunity to build strong relationships with your fellow cohort members and integrate into the wider LRN community. Following onboarding, you will rotate through up to three targeted middle and/or back-office teams such as Global Trading Operations, Treasury/Cash and Business Management.  Upon successful program completion, you will earn a post-LRN role on one of the participating middle/back-office teams with the aim of alignment between both your career aspirations and DRW’s business needs. This position is not a trading or quant role and does not involve trading strategy or investment decision-making.  Instead, examples of how we empower our LRNers to make an impact include: • Apply your acquired knowledge and skills to deliver tangible value through rotations in various middle and back-office teams • Analyze situations, develop solutions aligned with our strategic goals and respond constructively to feedback • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the business and gain a “behind the scenes” look at how our support functions work together cohesively • Effectively collaborate within diverse teams and build lasting relationships with cohort members and the LRN community • Lead projects and participate in daily processes, gaining insight into each team’s scope and their collective role in supporting our trading business You'll be right at home if you have: • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business, Finance, Business Analytics, Economics, or a related field, with a graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027 • An insatiable desire to learn, a curious mindset, unwavering commitment to integrity, and proven ability to deliver both individually and as part of a team • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, effective collaboration and communication skills, a capacity for rapid learning and strong sense of urgency • The ability to work independently while fostering strong working relationships across various business groups • Strong Excel skills and comfort working with large, structured data sets. • Foundational knowledge of SQL, Python, or similar data tools, with an ability and willingness to deepen these skills on the job • Ability to use AI-enabled tools to accelerate analysis, troubleshoot issues, draft queries or scripts, summarize information, and identify workflow improvements • Strong judgment in validating AI-generated outputs, protecting confidential information, documenting assumptions, and escalating uncertainty • Demonstrated analytical mindset, attention to detail, and ability to investigate data discrepancies, reconcile information across systems, and communicate conclusions clearly • Interest in automation, process improvement, and using technology to reduce manual effort and operational risk. • Work authorization in the United States without the need for sponsorship Additional target candidate qualities: • An interest in the trading and technology industry, with a specific aspiration to build a career in the middle/back-office • A desire to live and work in Chicago, IL (this opportunity requires physical presence and is not offered remotely) • A solid understanding of financial securities and their markets • Prior internship experience in/exposure to middle or back-office roles and operations but no prior full-time work experience (LRN is a junior analyst leadership pipeline opportunity best suited for new grads joining the workforce for the first time) If you excel in performance-driven environments and thrive on challenges, we encourage you to apply! DRW is a diversified trading firm with over 3 decades of experience bringing sophisticated technology and exceptional people together to operate in markets around the world.  We value autonomy and the ability to quickly pivot to capture opportunities, so we operate using our own capital and trading at our own risk.  Headquartered in Chicago with offices throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia, we trade a variety of asset classes including Fixed Income, ETFs, Equities, FX, Commodities and Energy across all major global markets.
