Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

You're responsible for coaching tellers. Tell me about a time you helped a coworker improve at something specific.

What they are checking: Whether they can coach by example and with feedback, not just do the work faster themselves.

Tell me about a time you had to handle a difficult customer that a teller escalated to you.

What they are checking: Whether they can resolve escalations calmly while backing up the teller and protecting the customer relationship.

How do you balance your own customer transactions with supporting the rest of the team?

What they are checking: Whether they can lead while still working the line, which is the real day-to-day of this role.

What would make you a good choice for the next step after lead teller?

What they are checking: Whether they are thinking about growth and taking on leadership responsibility in the branch.

What would you do

A teller comes up fifty dollars short at closing for the second time this month. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they follow balancing procedures, document properly and address the pattern with fairness and firmness.

How do you get tellers comfortable making referrals when some of them feel it's pushy?

What they are checking: Whether they can build referral habits by showing how needs-based conversations actually help customers.

A teller you're coaching keeps skipping a verification step to save time. What do you say?

What they are checking: Whether they will correct control lapses directly, since a lead teller is the first line of defense on procedure.

About the work

Walk me through how you manage the vault and teller cash limits, and what you'd do if the branch is over its cash limit.

What they are checking: Whether they understand vault management, dual control and cash ordering that a lead teller usually owns.

How do you set up the teller line for the day to cover breaks and the lunch rush?

What they are checking: Whether they can organize staffing and workflow so the line keeps moving at the busiest times.

What are the warning signs of check fraud you'd teach a new teller to look for?

What they are checking: Whether they know real fraud red flags well enough to train others and prevent losses at the window.
