Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you led a substation project that was behind schedule. What did you change?

What they are checking: Whether they can take ownership of delivery and make decisions that recover a project, not just report the delay.

How do you review a junior engineer's physical drawings, and how do you give feedback that helps them grow?

What they are checking: Whether they mentor and build up the team, since lead roles depend on developing others.

Are you licensed as a PE, or working toward it? How do you see licensure fitting into a lead role?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the responsibility of sealing drawings and are committed to the credential.

What would you do

The client's standards call for an equipment arrangement you believe creates a maintenance safety issue. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they raise safety concerns clearly with the client while respecting that the client makes the final call.

How do you coordinate your physical design with the protection and control and civil teams so conflicts don't show up during construction?

What they are checking: Whether they run cross-discipline coordination proactively instead of fixing clashes after drawings are issued.

About the work

Walk me through how you lay out a new 138 kV substation, from the one-line to the general arrangement.

What they are checking: Whether they can lead physical design from the start and make the big layout decisions that drive everything else.

How do you approach grounding grid design, and what do you do when step and touch potentials don't pass?

What they are checking: Whether they understand IEEE 80 grounding analysis and practical fixes for failing results.

What changes in your design approach between a 12 kV station and a 500 kV station?

What they are checking: Whether they have real experience across the voltage range the posting names, including clearance and structure differences.

How do substations that connect renewable generation differ from traditional load-serving stations in physical design?

What they are checking: Whether they understand interconnection work, which the posting names as a growing part of the business.

How do you size rigid bus and select insulators and structures for fault and wind loads?

What they are checking: Whether they can handle the structural and electrical calculations that keep bus systems safe under fault conditions.
