Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a new insurance product or rating feature you built from concept to launch. What was the market gap it solved?

whether the candidate has genuinely owned end-to-end product development, not just supported it

Tell me about a time you helped expand an insurance product into a new state. What did the pricing model development and regulatory readiness process actually involve?

direct experience with state expansion mechanics, since this is a core deliverable of the role

Tell me about a time actuarial or compliance pushed back on a product idea you proposed. How did you handle it?

skill at influencing cross-functional partners without formal authority, which the posting explicitly calls out

Tell me about a product or pricing idea you proposed that didn't get approved. What happened, and what did you learn?

self-awareness and resilience, since much of this role is proposing ideas that get filtered by regulators and stakeholders

Technical

How have you used AI or machine learning tools in a pricing, underwriting, or risk workflow, and what measurable difference did it make?

whether AI/ML experience is real and results-driven versus a resume buzzword

What's your process for translating competitive and market research into a specific pricing or coverage recommendation?

ability to move from qualitative insight to concrete, defensible product decisions

How do you think about regulatory modeling requirements when you're designing a new rating rule or coverage enhancement?

depth of understanding of state-by-state insurance regulation, not just familiarity with the term

What dashboards or KPIs have you built to track a product's performance after launch, and what did you do when the numbers told you something was wrong?

whether they build measurement into their own workflow rather than relying on others to flag issues

What's your experience level with homeowners insurance specifically, and how would you get up to speed quickly if it's limited?

honest self-assessment of domain gap and a realistic ramp-up plan, since homeowners experience is preferred but not required

Situational

Say you're building a pricing model for a brand-new state with limited historical loss data. How would you approach it?

practical judgment on modeling under data scarcity, a common real problem in expansion work

Imagine a new pricing feature launches and the early KPIs look worse than projected. What do you do in the first two weeks?

post-launch monitoring instincts and comfort making fast, data-based calls

You're juggling optimization of an existing state's pricing model and building a brand-new state's model at the same time, both with looming deadlines. How do you prioritize?

ability to manage competing high-stakes workstreams independently, since this is a hands-on individual contributor role

How do you decide when a pricing enhancement is ready to bring to regulators versus needing more validation?

judgment on regulatory risk tolerance and readiness, critical for someone owning submissions

Quick Summary You'll design new insurance products and features, then drive their rollout across new and existing states. 5+ years of product development experience required. Who We Are Kin makes life simpler, more affordable, and better for homeowners — especially in the places where climate risks, rising costs, and outdated systems make it hardest. We start with smarter homeowners insurance and expand to everything homeowners need to thrive. Using data, technology, and thoughtful human support, we're building products that are clear, fair, and help homeowners feel confident — so homeowners aren't left behind when they need help most. Founded in 2016, Kin is a remote-first employer with Kinfolk across more than 35 states. We serve customers in 14 states (and counting). Our disciplined growth, strong customer satisfaction, and focus on long-term sustainability foster outstanding growth, attract marquee investors, and earn recognition and accolades, including: - Built In Chicago's Best Places to Work, Midsize Companies (2021-2026) - Forbes' America's Best Startup Employers (2026) - Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Private Companies - Forbes' Fintech 50 (2023-2026) - Great Places to Work Certified (2024-2026) Most importantly, we're building Kin to be a place where people do meaningful work with real impact — for our customers, our communities, and each other. We're excited to tell you more about how you can contribute to our rapid growth, strong unit economics, profitability, and excellent customer ratings. To learn more about how we work and what we're building, visit kin.com and see how we work ( https://www.linkedin.com/company/kin-insurance/life/kin/ ). The Opportunity We're looking for a Pricing and Risk Manager to help us build the next generation of insurance products and coverages as well as expand Kin's footprint across states. This role sits at the intersection of pricing strategy and product development — turning market insight and risk analysis into new coverage options, rating features, and pricing enhancements that customers actually feel. This is a hands-on, builder-focused role. You won't be managing a team — you'll be directly shaping the products and features that power Kin's growth, from initial concept through launch in both new and existing states. Your work will directly influence how competitively and confidently Kin can enter new markets and deepen its presence in current ones. Your Responsibilities • Design and develop new insurance products, rules, coverages, and enhancements that improve competitiveness and customer value • Lead state expansion efforts by building and launching pricing models for new states, and optimizing existing state models for performance • Own the research and proposal of new products, rules, coverages, and enhancements • Own the end-to-end rollout process, from initial pricing analysis through launch and post-launch monitoring • Leverage AI and machine learning tools to enhance pricing accuracy, uncover emerging risk patterns, and accelerate analytical workflows • Partner cross-functionally with actuarial, product, and compliance teams to ensure new features are technically sound and regulator-ready • Build and maintain dashboards and KPIs that track the performance of newly launched products and pricing features • Translate market and competitive research into concrete product recommendations and pricing adjustments • Identify opportunities for pricing innovation ahead of state expansion, ensuring readiness for regulatory review and market entry Success in This Role In your first 6–12 months at Kin, success is less about checking boxes and more about the impact you create. You'll use your skills and judgment to take ownership of meaningful work, improve how we operate, and help move Kin's mission forward. Along the way, you'll deliver outcomes that make a real difference for both Kinfolk and the homeowners we serve. By the end of your first year, you should feel confident in your role, trusted as an owner, and proud of the progress you've helped make. • New pricing products or features have been successfully launched, showing meaningful impact to growth goals • State expansion pricing models are built, validated, and ready for regulatory submission • AI/ML tools are actively integrated into the pricing development workflow, improving speed or accuracy of analysis • Cross-functional partners trust this person's product recommendations and rely on their analysis to make launch decisions What You'll Bring • 5+ years of insurance product development experience • Demonstrated experience building or launching new insurance products, features, or rating enhancements • Experience supporting state expansion efforts, including new-state pricing model development and regulatory readiness • Hands-on experience applying AI and machine learning tools to pricing, underwriting, or risk workflows, with measurable results • Strong understanding of regulatory modeling and compliance requirements across multiple states • Ability to translate market research and competitive analysis into concrete pricing and product recommendations • Comfortable partnering cross-functionally with actuarial, product, and compliance teams without formal authority over those teams • Homeowners insurance experience preferred but not necessary How We Hire We believe a great hiring experience should be clear, respectful, and human. We will accept applications for this position until September 28th. While our recruiting team uses AI tools for efficiency, resumes are still screened by Kin's in-house recruiters, and candidate evaluations and hiring decisions are made by recruiters and hiring teams. Rest assured, real people make real decisions. The hiring process and timeline for each role will vary, depending on the position. However, here are some things you can expect from us: • Prompt updates and feedback following interviews • Interviews with recruiters, hiring managers, and members of teams • Skills assessment relevant to the position, if applicable • Genuine, thoughtful human interaction at every step How we work We don’t just hire for skills. We hire for alignment. Kinfolk bring diverse perspectives, but we’re united by a shared set of values that shape how we work and how we show up for each other and our customers. Run through walls, together - Every one of us is responsible for creating the culture we want to work in. High performance. Low drama. Always respectful. We assume the best in each other and challenge ideas, not intentions. We show up, work hard, and play to each other's strengths — because that’s how great teams win. Raise the bar. Drop the ego - Attitudes are contagious. Every one of us is responsible for creating the culture we want to work in. High performance. Low drama. Always respectful. Like professional sports teams, we win by working in sync. We show up, work hard, and play to each other’s strengths. Act like an owner - We are owners, fully accountable for achieving Kin’s mission. That requires positive, proactive, big-picture thinking well beyond our job descriptions. Ask questions, Take ownership. Do the right thing, even when it‘s hard. Because when Kin thrives, so do you. And so do our customers. Operate lean. Deliver more - We build efficiency into everything we do. Each dollar we save gets reinvested to deliver more to our customers: better pricing, more products, and new innovations. We work smarter by relentlessly prioritizing and using technology, including AI, to multiply our impact. Lean is about focus, not deprivation. Lean isn't a limitation — it's our competitive advantage. Keep asking ‘What if?’ - We value curiosity. To make insurance better for our customers, we experiment. We embrace insights.
