Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you handled a customer complaint about a late or wrong delivery. What did you do first?
What they are checking: Whether they calm the customer and take ownership of fixing it, instead of passing blame to the yard or the driver.
Tell me about a time you tracked down a back order or a billing problem that nobody else wanted to deal with.
What they are checking: Whether they follow through on the unglamorous loose ends that keep contractors trusting the yard.
When the counter is slow, what do you do with your time?
What they are checking: Whether they will restock the sales floor and stockroom and chase follow-ups on their own without being told.
What would you do
A contractor calls asking for a price on replacement windows but only gives you rough opening sizes. How do you get to an accurate quote?
What they are checking: Whether they ask the right follow-up questions before quoting, since wrong dimensions on windows and doors turn into costly returns.
This is a seasonal part-time role. What would you do in your first two weeks to learn our product lines, from siding and roofing to millwork and lumber?
What they are checking: How quickly they can get useful on a counter that sells hundreds of building products without months of training.
An outside sales rep needs a special-order door quoted by end of day, and you also have three walk-in customers waiting. How do you handle it?
What they are checking: Whether they can juggle in-person customers and internal support requests without dropping either one.
A builder says a competitor quoted the same decking for less. What do you say?
What they are checking: Whether they can defend value like availability, delivery and service without immediately caving on price.
About the work
How do you decide which customers to call when you are making outbound calls to generate sales?
What they are checking: Whether they think about purchase history and timing, or just dial down a list hoping something sticks.
Walk me through how you would enter a return authorization and a credit for a customer who received the wrong trim package.
What they are checking: Whether they understand that clean paperwork on returns and credits keeps billing accurate and avoids disputes later.
How comfortable are you reading product dimensions, like nominal versus actual lumber sizes or rough openings for doors?
What they are checking: Whether they have the basic building-material literacy needed to answer customer questions without guessing.
