Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

You would support business continuity, disaster recovery and incident response testing. What have you learned from a test that failed?

What they are checking: Whether they run tests hard enough to find real gaps and then fix them, because a test that never fails proves very little.

This sits in Booth's information technology group, a school with four campuses including London and Hong Kong. What would you want to know about the current security posture before accepting?

What they are checking: Whether they ask what security state they would be inheriting across four campuses, which shows realistic thinking before taking responsibility for it.

What would you do

Walk me through investigating a security alert that turns out to be real.

What they are checking: Whether they follow a clear sequence from triage through containment and documentation, because a confirmed incident leaves no time to improvise.

You would implement least-privilege access and role-based models. How do you reduce someone's access without breaking their work?

What they are checking: Whether they can cut excess access carefully and with communication, since breaking someone's work makes people resist future security changes.

How do you give guidance on secure design to a team that is already building?

What they are checking: Whether they can influence a team that has already made design choices, offering practical fixes rather than demanding that they start over.

About the work

This role protects systems holding health information, personally identifiable information and student education records. How do those three regimes differ in what they require of you?

What they are checking: Real knowledge of the named regulations rather than listing them back.

You would administer endpoint protection, vulnerability management, encryption and multi-factor authentication. Which of those gives the most protection for the effort, and which is hardest to run well?

What they are checking: Whether they can weigh security controls by real-world payoff and operational effort, rather than treating every tool as equally important.

A business school has faculty, students and executive education participants on the same systems. How does that mix change your approach?

What they are checking: Awareness of the specific environment rather than a corporate answer.

You would conduct vulnerability reviews and configuration audits. How do you prioritize what to fix when the list is long?

What they are checking: Whether they prioritize fixes by actual exposure and business impact, not just severity scores, because the list will always outrun the time.

How do you maintain security documentation so that an audit is uneventful?

What they are checking: Whether they keep documentation current as part of normal work, so an audit becomes routine rather than a last-minute scramble.
