Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
Behavioral
Tell me about a time you had to explain a technical fix to someone who didn't have your level of experience. How did you adjust what you said?
ability to scale technical communication to the listener's skill level, since dealer techs range from novice to master
Tell me about a warranty claim you had to make a judgment call on without a clear rulebook to follow.
comfort authorizing decisions autonomously and reasoning through ambiguous policy situations
Describe a time you mentored someone less experienced than you. What did you focus on teaching first?
leadership readiness given this role's expectation to mentor other reps
Tell me about a time a customer was upset or aggressive on the phone. What did you do in the moment and afterward?
ability to stay calm and professional under stress, since this role fields high-stress dealer calls all day
Technical
Walk me through how you'd troubleshoot a genset that a dealer technician says shuts down intermittently under load, but only in the field, not on the bench.
whether the candidate can structure a diagnostic process for an intermittent, hard-to-reproduce problem rather than guessing
What's your experience reading wiring diagrams and schematics for AC and DC systems, and can you describe a case where the schematic didn't match what you found in the field?
depth of real electrical troubleshooting experience versus surface familiarity
What's your background with engine diagnostics on gaseous or diesel engines, and how does that translate to working on generator sets specifically?
whether prior mechanical background actually transfers to genset-specific failure modes
What do you know about control system programming, and have you had to troubleshoot a control board or logic issue before?
whether the candidate has any exposure to the 'basic control system programming' requirement, which is less common than mechanical background
Have you used systems like SAP, Salesforce, or similar case management and parts systems? Tell me about a time one of those systems made your job harder rather than easier.
real familiarity with enterprise systems and adaptability when tools are imperfect
Situational
A master technician calls in frustrated because a previous rep gave him wrong troubleshooting steps and he's already spent hours on it. How do you handle that call?
composure under pressure and ability to de-escalate while still fixing the actual problem
How would you walk a brand-new dealer technician through submitting their first warranty claim electronically?
patience and clarity when onboarding someone unfamiliar with internal systems
You get an email escalation from a key account describing a highly complex, recurring failure. Walk me through how you'd handle that case from start to finish.
organizational skill in managing escalated cases and documenting for engineering follow-up
How do you decide what information is worth capturing in your case notes versus what you leave out?
understanding of documentation quality for handoffs to quality and engineering teams
