Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role supports the committees that review animal research and biosafety protocols. What protocol review or research compliance work have you done?

What they are checking: Whether they have done protocol review or research compliance before, since this role requires knowing animal and biosafety regulations from day one.

How do you work with a senior investigator who treats compliance as an obstacle?

What they are checking: Whether they can hold a compliance standard with a senior scientist respectfully, without backing down because of rank or reputation.

This work sits between animal welfare and scientific progress. How do you think about that?

What they are checking: Whether they have a balanced view that both animal welfare and good science matter, since the committees exist to protect both.

What would you do

An investigator is doing something their approved protocol does not cover. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they will act firmly and fairly when research goes beyond its approval, since unapproved work threatens animal welfare and institutional funding.

You'd coordinate compliance committee meetings. How do you prepare a committee so its review is real rather than a formality?

What they are checking: Whether they prepare committee members with clear, complete materials so the review is meaningful, not a rubber stamp on protocols.

About the work

You'd guide investigators preparing protocols and review submissions for completeness. What is usually missing when a protocol comes in?

What they are checking: Whether they know the common gaps in protocol submissions, because catching them early saves investigators time and keeps committee reviews moving.

You'd ensure ancillary reviews by chemical safety and radiation safety are completed. How would you track a protocol through several offices without it stalling?

What they are checking: Whether they can track a protocol through several safety offices so it does not stall, since that coordination is where approvals usually get stuck.

You'd prepare and conduct semi-annual facility inspections. What are you looking for on one?

What they are checking: Whether they know what a facility inspection actually checks, from animal housing to records, because missed findings can put the whole program at risk.

You'd plan and execute audits and support regulatory agency inspections. How do you prepare a program for an inspection?

What they are checking: Whether they keep a program inspection-ready all year, because a federal or accrediting inspection can come with little notice.

The posting asks for a degree with two to five years of related experience and prefers three or more years in a biological or animal research setting. Where do you sit?

What they are checking: Whether their degree and research experience meet the stated requirements, and whether they can describe honestly where they fall short.
