Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a technical study you completed under a tight interconnection deadline.

What they are checking: Whether they can deliver accurate work on the schedules that ISO processes impose.

How do you stay current on changing interconnection rules and standards?

What they are checking: Whether they keep up with standards like IEEE 2800 and FERC rule changes that affect their work.

What would you do

Your model results don't match field data after an event at a plant. How do you approach that?

What they are checking: Whether they can investigate model accuracy methodically and know which parameters usually cause mismatches.

An ISO asks for changes to your plant model that you think are wrong. How do you respond?

What they are checking: Whether they can push back with evidence while keeping a working relationship with grid operators.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd build and validate a dynamic model of an inverter-based resource for an interconnection study.

What they are checking: Whether they have real modeling experience and know how to check that a model matches actual equipment.

Which power system tools have you used, such as PSS/E, PSCAD or PowerWorld, and for what studies?

What they are checking: Whether their tool experience matches the steady-state, dynamic and EMT work the role covers.

How do grid-code requirements like ride-through and reactive power differ across ISOs and RTOs?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that compliance requirements vary by market and affect plant design.

A large-load customer, like a data center, wants to connect near one of our plants. What studies would you think about?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how large loads affect voltage, stability and interconnection requirements.

How do you explain a study result to a development team that isn't technical?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate engineering findings into clear risks and decisions for developers.

What's the role of EMT studies for inverter-based resources, and when are they needed?
