Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time a customer wanted something you knew wouldn't work well. How did you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can push back with tact and offer a better option instead of just doing what's asked.

Tell me about a time you had several customers waiting on you at once. How did you decide who came first?

What they are checking: Whether they can prioritize by build schedule and urgency without letting anyone go silent.

Even in a design role here you're near a production floor. What does keeping a safe work area mean to you?

What they are checking: Whether they take the posting's safety expectations seriously rather than seeing them as only a shop-floor concern.

What would you do

A fire department sends you a rough sketch of the graphics they want on a new pumper. How do you turn that into a design they'll sign off on?

What they are checking: Whether they can draw out what a customer really wants and guide them to something buildable.

A customer sends a change order after the graphics are already in production. What do you do first?

What they are checking: Whether they check impact on cost, schedule and the shop floor before saying yes to the customer.

Departments often care a lot about their emblem and lettering. How do you handle a request with real personal or community meaning?

What they are checking: Whether they treat a department's identity with care, since these trucks represent the community for decades.

Walk me through how you hand off a finished design to the applicators on the floor.

What they are checking: Whether they think about the people installing the work and give them clear, complete instructions.

About the work

What design software have you used to create artwork, and how do you set up files so they can actually be cut and applied to a truck?

What they are checking: Whether their design skills reach production-ready output, not just artwork that looks good on screen.

How do you make sure the dimensions on your design match the actual body of the truck it's going on?

What they are checking: Whether they check measurements against prints, because a design that doesn't fit wastes material and time.

How do you keep track of approvals so there's no question later about what the customer signed off on?

What they are checking: Whether they keep clean records, since a disputed design on a finished truck is expensive to fix.
