Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you found a compliance error in past entries. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they would raise and correct problems, including prior disclosures, instead of quietly moving on.

Tell me about a time you had to explain a trade rule to someone in purchasing or logistics who did not like the answer.

What they are checking: Whether they can hold a compliance line while keeping good working relationships with the business.

How do you keep up with changes in tariffs and trade rules, which can shift quickly?

What they are checking: Whether they have a reliable way to track changes, since stale knowledge leads to costly mistakes.

What would you do

How do you work with customs brokers to make sure entries are filed correctly?

What they are checking: Whether they audit and guide brokers rather than assuming the broker is always right.

Sourcing wants to switch suppliers to save money. What trade questions would you raise?

What they are checking: Whether they can show the duty and origin impact early so the business sees the full landed cost.

About the work

How do you determine the correct HTS classification for a product like a plumbing valve or a drinking fountain component?

What they are checking: Whether they can apply the General Rules of Interpretation instead of guessing, since a wrong code means wrong duty.

Walk me through how you would determine country of origin for a part assembled in Mexico from Chinese components.

What they are checking: Whether they understand substantial transformation and trade agreement rules, which drive duties and tariff exposure.

How have you handled the Section 301 or Section 232 tariffs in past work?

What they are checking: Whether they have real experience managing tariff costs and exclusions that affect a manufacturer with global suppliers.

What does a good USMCA certification process look like?

What they are checking: Whether they know how to qualify goods and keep supplier support on file to defend preferential claims.

How would you screen customers and shipments for restricted parties and export controls?

What they are checking: Whether they cover the export side too, since a missed denied party hit carries serious penalties.

What reports or metrics would you build to show the health of the trade compliance program?

What they are checking: Whether they think about audit readiness and duty spend in a way leadership can use.
