Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a team of GIS professionals you've led. How did you set priorities when every project team wanted maps yesterday?

What they are checking: Whether they can manage demand from many internal clients without the team burning out or quality slipping.

How would you develop a junior GIS analyst into someone who can own a project on their own?

What they are checking: Whether they invest in people and know which skills to build in what order.

Tell me about a time you pushed a strategic change in how a GIS team worked. What resistance did you hit?

What they are checking: Whether they can lead change with a team and stakeholders rather than just manage day to day.

What would you do

A permitting filing went out with an outdated parcel layer. How do you respond, and how do you stop it from happening again?

What they are checking: Whether they own data errors and fix the process, since wrong maps can cause legal and permit trouble.

How do you work with an internal client who keeps changing what they want from a map deliverable?

What they are checking: Whether they can set clear scope and expectations while still serving the business.

How do you measure whether your GIS team is doing a good job?

What they are checking: Whether they think about accuracy, turnaround and client trust rather than just number of maps made.

About the work

What does good geospatial data governance look like across a project lifecycle from siting to operations?

What they are checking: Whether they understand version control, metadata, ownership and standards that keep spatial data trustworthy.

How do you structure enterprise GIS so land, environmental and engineering teams all work from one source of truth?

What they are checking: Whether they can design databases and workflows for a large organization instead of scattered personal files.

Which parts of map production have you automated, and what tools did you use?

What they are checking: Whether they use Python, ModelBuilder or similar to improve workflows instead of doing repeat work by hand.

What geospatial data sources matter most for siting wind, solar and transmission projects?

What they are checking: Whether they know the parcel, wetland, habitat, terrain and grid data that drive energy siting.
