Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you found a compliance breach that turned out to be real. How did you resolve it and report it?

What they are checking: Whether they own a real issue through root cause, client communication and remediation rather than just logging it.

How do you develop analysts on a compliance team so they can make sound calls without checking everything with you?

What they are checking: Whether they build judgment in their team instead of becoming a bottleneck for every exception.

How do you keep your team current when SEC rules change, such as new reporting requirements for funds?

What they are checking: Whether they treat regulatory change as an ongoing process with owners and deadlines, not something learned at the last minute.

Tell me about a process you changed to reduce manual compliance testing. What did it improve and what risk did it add?

What they are checking: Whether they can improve efficiency while still thinking about what automation might miss.

What would you do

Your team flags a potential prospectus violation at 4 p.m. on a busy day. What happens next, and who do you call?

What they are checking: Whether they know an escalation path that protects the fund and the client without causing panic or hiding the issue.

An examiner or auditor asks for evidence of your monitoring over the last year. How do you make sure your team can produce it quickly?

What they are checking: Whether they run a program where documentation is built in daily, not reconstructed under pressure.

A client pushes back and says a guideline you flagged does not apply the way you read it. How do you handle that conversation?

What they are checking: Whether they can hold a compliance position with a client while staying open to a documented clarification.

About the work

Walk me through how you would set up daily compliance monitoring for a new ETF client with prospectus limits and client-specific guidelines.

What they are checking: Whether they can turn a prospectus and guideline set into concrete, testable daily checks rather than a vague review.

Which parts of the Investment Company Act of 1940 come up most often in daily compliance work for registered funds, and why?

What they are checking: Whether their knowledge of the '40 Act is practical, tied to diversification, affiliated transactions and leverage limits they actually test.

How does compliance monitoring differ for a business development company compared with an open-end mutual fund?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that BDCs carry different asset coverage and qualifying asset rules, so one template will not cover every client.

How do you decide whether an issue is a true breach, a passive breach from market movement, or a data error?

What they are checking: Whether they can tell the type of exception apart, because the response and reporting obligation differ for each.
