Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you helped run a register area or checkout line. What did you do beyond ringing customers?

What they are checking: Whether they have looked after the whole front end before, not just their own register.

Tell me about a time you had to correct someone who was older or more experienced than you.

What they are checking: Whether they can lead respectfully when authority alone will not earn cooperation.

How do you keep your own energy up so the cashiers follow your lead?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that a supervisor sets the tone and role models service for the front end.

What would you do

How would you assign registers and plan breaks on a Saturday when the store is packed?

What they are checking: Whether they can plan POS coverage ahead so breaks happen on time and lines stay short.

A cashier's drawer comes up short at the end of the shift. What steps do you take?

What they are checking: Whether they handle cash discrepancies by policy and without jumping to accusations.

How would you coach a shy cashier to mention our credit and loyalty programs?

A customer asks to speak to someone in charge about a price that rang up wrong. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they fix the issue fairly and quickly while following price-adjustment policy.

This is a part-time role. How do you stay up to date on changes that happen on days you are not working?

What they are checking: Whether they take initiative to catch up, so part-time hours do not mean outdated information at the front.

You notice a cashier often voids transactions with no customer present. What do you think and what do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they recognize a possible dishonesty pattern and bring it to management quietly and confidentially.

About the work

What does good front end training look like for a new seasonal cashier?

What they are checking: Whether they know what a new cashier needs first, such as returns, tender types and counting change back.
