Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a dashboard you built. Who used it, and what did they decide differently because of it?
What they are checking: Whether they build reports that drive decisions rather than just display data nobody reads.
Tell me about a time you got an ad hoc request with a vague question behind it. How did you figure out what the person really needed?
What they are checking: Whether they clarify the real question before building something, which saves hours of rework for everyone.
Tell me about a time you found a mistake in a report after it went out. What happened next?
What they are checking: Whether they speak up fast about their own errors, which matters more in finance than never making one.
This role is hybrid at headquarters three days a week. How do you build working relationships with segment finance teams you rarely see in person?
What they are checking: Whether they make the effort to know the people behind the numbers, which makes every forecast cycle smoother.
What would you do
You are pulling together the quarterly forecast from five segment finance teams. One segment's numbers come in late and look off. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they can chase and challenge a segment team professionally while still meeting a corporate deadline.
How would you explain a variance between our budget and actual results to a leader who has five minutes?
What they are checking: Whether they can find the one or two drivers that matter and say them plainly, without drowning a leader in detail.
About the work
Have you worked in OneStream, Hyperion or another planning tool? Walk me through how data flows from a segment submission to a consolidated view.
What they are checking: Whether they understand the mechanics of a consolidation tool well enough to trace a number when it looks wrong.
What is the difference between a budget, a forecast and an outlook, and why does a company need all three?
What they are checking: Whether they understand the purpose of each planning cycle, not just how to fill in the template.
Walk me through how you would build a template that segment teams fill out for the annual budget.
What they are checking: Whether they design inputs that are hard to get wrong and easy to roll up across many different businesses.
How do you check your own work before a number goes to senior leadership?
What they are checking: Whether they have real checks like tie-outs and reasonableness tests, since an error at corporate level spreads fast.
What Excel or data skills do you rely on most, and where have you used something beyond Excel?
What they are checking: Whether they work efficiently with large data sets and can grow into more automated reporting tools.
