Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role advises financial services clients on cybersecurity in a consulting setting. Walk me through an engagement you led.

What they are checking: Whether they have led engagements from scoping to delivery, because senior consultants are expected to run client work with limited supervision.

How do you explain a technical risk to a chief executive who is not technical?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate technical risk into business impact and choices, because executives are the people who buy and fund this work.

How do you keep current in this field while billing most of your hours?

What they are checking: Whether they protect learning time despite billing pressure, because cybersecurity changes quickly and outdated advice harms clients.

You'd work alongside junior consultants on engagements. How do you get useful work out of someone newer than you?

What they are checking: Whether they can delegate, review and coach effectively, because consulting depends on getting good work from the whole team, not just yourself.

What would you do

How do you assess a client's security program when you have three weeks and limited access?

What they are checking: Whether they can prioritize the highest risks within limited time and access, because consulting work always runs against a fixed budget.

How do you build a cybersecurity roadmap a client will actually fund?

What they are checking: Whether they tie recommendations to risk, cost and business priorities, so the client can actually fund and carry out the plan.

A client disagrees with your assessment of their risk. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they defend their findings with evidence while listening carefully, because consultants need both credibility and a good client relationship.

Crowe posts a Financial Services Cybersecurity Internal Audit Senior Consultant role alongside this one. Why the advisory side rather than the audit side?

What they are checking: A real reason for this half of a twin pair

About the work

What are banks and insurers most exposed to right now, and what are they doing about it?

What they are checking: Whether they follow current threats and responses in banking and insurance, because clients expect advisors with up-to-date sector knowledge.

Financial services carries a dense regulatory environment. Which requirements shape a security program most, and where do firms fall short?

What they are checking: Whether they know the regulations that drive financial services security programs and where firms struggle, because clients hire for that expertise.

Basic Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Risk Management, Finance, or a related field. • 2+ years of experience in cybersecurity, technology risk, information security, regulatory advisory, or related consulting or industry roles. • Experience working with or supporting financial services organizations or other highly regulated environments. • Understanding of second-line risk management, including risk assessment, oversight and challenge, issue management, risk appetite, governance, and reporting. • Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks and financial services regulatory expectations. • Strong analytical, project management, written communication, and executive presentation skills. • Ability to translate technical cybersecurity risks into clear business and risk implications. Preferred Qualifications • Experience in a second-line cybersecurity or technology risk function within banking, insurance, asset/wealth management, capital markets, fintech, or another financial services organization. • Knowledge of FFIEC, GLBA, NYDFS Part 500, SEC cybersecurity requirements, and other financial services regulatory expectations. • Experience with cybersecurity domains such as IAM, cloud security, data protection, third-party risk, vulnerability management, cyber resilience, and incident response. • Experience supporting regulatory examinations, cybersecurity program assessments, remediation programs, or risk transformation initiatives. • Experience developing or enhancing cybersecurity risk appetite, KRIs, metrics, executive reporting, and board reporting. • Certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CRISC, or similar credentials. • Experience with emerging technology risks, including AI governance, AI risk management, and secure adoption of AI technologies.
