Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a variance you investigated that turned out to be something other than what everyone assumed.

What they are checking: Whether they follow a number to its cause or accept the first explanation offered.

Tell me about a time you had to explain a movement in the numbers to someone who did not want to hear it.

What they are checking: Whether they can hold a position with a commercial partner who is under their own pressure.

This team partners with copay, price forecasting, and systems. Tell me about working across teams who all had different numbers.

What they are checking: Whether they can reconcile people as well as accounts.

Tell me about a process you documented or improved because it kept going wrong.

What they are checking: Whether they fix the cause or keep fixing the symptom every quarter.

What would you do

How do you decide whether an accrual is reasonable when the underlying data is still incomplete?

What they are checking: Judgment under uncertainty, which is most of what a reserve estimate is.

It is close to quarter end and you find an error in a prior period estimate. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they raise it immediately or hope it washes out next quarter.

The reserves here run to billions. Does the size of the numbers change how you work?

What they are checking: Whether the scale is something they have thought about honestly, rather than performing confidence about it.

About the work

Explain gross to net to someone who understands accounting but has never worked in pharma.

What they are checking: Whether they genuinely understand the mechanics or have only heard the term.

Walk me through how you would reconcile a contra receivable balance and find out why it moved.

What they are checking: Whether they can actually do the core task of this job, described in their own order.

What SOX controls have you been responsible for documenting, and what made the documentation hard?

What they are checking: Real control ownership rather than having sat near someone who had it.

How do you build a forecast for something as lumpy as coupon redemption?

What they are checking: Method for forecasting something genuinely hard to predict, rather than trending last year forward.

What checks do you run on your own work before anyone else sees it?

What they are checking: Whether they have a real self-review habit, which is what keeps a reconciliation role from blowing up.
