Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

How do you build a financial scenario that helps a business leader make a decision rather than just showing them options?

What they are checking: Whether they frame scenarios around the decision a leader faces, with a clear recommendation, rather than handing over a menu of options.

What would you do

A procurement leader's forecast doesn't match what you think the spend will be. How do you handle that?

What they are checking: Whether they will challenge a leader's forecast with evidence while keeping the relationship, since finance adds little if it simply agrees.

How do you keep planning-system information accurate and aligned with approved assumptions when people keep changing their numbers?

What they are checking: System discipline against a moving business, named in the posting

What do you do when someone asks you to present a number in a way you think is misleading?

What they are checking: Whether they will refuse to present numbers in a misleading way, because finance credibility rests on people trusting what they are shown.

This is based at North Chicago supporting procurement. What would you want to know about the cost base and the current planning process before you took it?

What they are checking: Whether they ask about the cost base, data quality and current planning habits before accepting, showing they know what makes this role hard.

About the work

This role runs planning and analysis for procurement in research and development and operations. Walk me through how you'd lead an annual plan cycle.

What they are checking: Whether they can run a full planning cycle, from assumptions and timelines to partner reviews, rather than only filling in templates.

The posting names the annual plan, the long-range plan and the latest business estimate. How do they differ in what you build and who you build it with?

What they are checking: Whether they understand what each planning cycle is for and who shapes it, since mixing them up produces forecasts nobody can use.

How do you build a headcount forecast that holds up?

What they are checking: A named component and a common source of forecast error

How do you produce variance analysis that explains what actually happened rather than restating the numbers?

What they are checking: Whether they explain what drove a variance and what it means next, because restated numbers give leaders nothing to act on.

You'd support the shared services monthly close. What do you check to know the results are complete and accurate?

What they are checking: Whether they have concrete close checks, such as accruals, reclasses and reconciliations, so reported procurement results are complete and correct.
