Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role runs events for a new university center focused on free expression and open discourse. What event management have you done?

What they are checking: Whether they have managed events from start to finish, since a new center's reputation will depend heavily on how its events run.

You'd partner with a student engagement manager on student-led events. How do you support students running their own event without taking it over?

What they are checking: Whether they can guide students while letting them own their event, since student-led programs build skills only when students truly lead.

What would you do

Events at a center about open discourse can attract protest or controversy. How does that change your planning?

What they are checking: Whether they plan for security, protest and safety at sensitive events, so open discussion can happen without disruption or anyone getting hurt.

You'd create and manage event budgets and track cost savings year on year. How do you cut cost on an annual event without the audience noticing?

What they are checking: Whether they can find savings without lowering the audience experience, since budget discipline matters but attendees should not feel the cuts.

You'd oversee conferences hosted overseas and negotiate with vendors and agencies abroad. What is harder about an event in another country?

What they are checking: Whether they understand challenges like contracts, currencies and local customs abroad, since overseas events carry more risk and less control.

Something fails an hour before doors. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they stay calm and act decisively on a last-minute failure, since guests arriving soon leave no room for panic or delay.

You'd provide post-event feedback on turnout and vendor performance. What would make you not use a vendor again?

What they are checking: Whether they hold vendors to clear standards like reliability and communication, since a weak vendor can undermine an entire event.

The posting asks for a degree with two to five years of related experience and says you would flexibly support evening and weekend events. Does that work, and what would you want to know about the event calendar before you took it?

What they are checking: Whether they can truly commit to evening and weekend work, and would ask about the event calendar before accepting the job.

About the work

You'd handle in-person, hybrid and virtual events. Walk me through deciding the technology for a hybrid event.

What they are checking: Whether they choose hybrid technology based on audience, venue and engagement needs, so remote attendees have a genuinely good experience.

You'd coordinate venue, security, catering, transportation and décor. Walk me through the week before a major event.

What they are checking: Whether they can lay out a realistic week of confirmations and contingencies, which shows they truly manage events rather than improvise them.
