Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you trained adults who did not want to be in the room. What did you do to get them engaged?

What they are checking: Whether they can reach frontline staff who see training as a chore, which is most of the audience in EVS.

Tell me about a policy or standard work document you wrote or rewrote. How did you make sure people actually followed it?

What they are checking: Whether they can write clear procedures and drive adoption, since this role recommends departmental policies and standard work.

What would you do

You notice one shift has a much higher rate of missed steps on isolation room cleans. How do you figure out whether it is a training problem or something else?

What they are checking: Whether they diagnose root causes like staffing or supplies before assuming more training will fix the gap.

Turnover in EVS is often high in the first ninety days. What would you try in a retention program, and how would you know if it worked?

What they are checking: Whether they connect training and support to retention and can measure results instead of just running activities.

A supervisor tells you a long-time colleague is skipping steps but says they have always done it that way. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can correct experienced staff respectfully while holding the standard that protects patients.

This role covers Decatur and Springfield. How would you keep training consistent across two hospitals with different leaders and habits?

What they are checking: Whether they can standardize practice across sites without ignoring real local differences.

About the work

Walk me through how you would onboard a new EVS colleague in their first two weeks, from day one to working a unit alone.

What they are checking: Whether they can build a structured onboarding path that ends in real, verified competence rather than a stack of signed forms.

An auditor asks to see proof that every EVS colleague completed their annual competencies and CBL assignments. How do you keep training records so that request takes minutes, not days?

What they are checking: Whether they treat record keeping as an ongoing system, since being audit-ready is a core part of this job.

How would you teach the difference between cleaning and disinfecting, including contact times, to someone with no healthcare background?

What they are checking: Whether they understand infection prevention well enough to explain it simply and correctly to new hires.

What OSHA topics do you think every EVS colleague needs to understand, and how would you make them stick?

What they are checking: Whether they know the real safety risks of the work, such as bloodborne pathogens, chemicals and sharps, and can teach them well.

How would you teach housekeepers what good patient experience looks like when they enter a patient room?

What they are checking: Whether they see EVS staff as part of patient care and can coach the small behaviors patients notice.
