attention to detail and comfort with technical data recording under real conditions

Tell me about a time you worked on a cross-functional or project team. What was your specific role?

ability to function as a support technician within a larger engineering team rather than working in isolation

practical fabrication skill and whether they double-check their own output against a standard

Tell me about a time manufacturing came to you with a problem on the floor and needed your help troubleshooting. What did you do?

ability to support production under time pressure and communicate findings clearly

Technical

whether the candidate can follow a documented procedure precisely rather than improvise, which matters in an ISO 17025 lab

What experience do you have using multimeters, power analyzers, or similar electrical measurement equipment?

hands-on familiarity with the specific tools this job requires day to day

Have you worked with engine dynamometers or combustion engines before? Tell me what that looked like.

real exposure to the specialized equipment called out as preferred, since it's not something you can fake

What does 5S mean to you, and can you describe a workplace where you actually practiced it?

whether they have real lab or shop floor organizational discipline versus just knowing the term

How comfortable are you writing up a formal test report that someone else, maybe an engineer, will rely on to make a decision?

written communication skill and understanding of the stakes of accurate reporting

Tell me about your personal tool set. What do you have, and how do you keep it maintained?

basic readiness and ownership since the job requires providing your own tools

Situational

Say you're running a test and the equipment starts giving you readings that don't match what you expected. What do you do next?

troubleshooting instinct and whether they escalate appropriately instead of guessing or ignoring anomalies

This role means working third shift, sometimes with extended hours. What's your experience with that kind of schedule, and how do you manage your focus during those hours?

realistic self-awareness about shift work and whether they've actually sustained it before

How would you go about maintaining test-related records in a database, and what would you do if you noticed the data didn't match what BOM or spec documents said it should?

database discipline and willingness to flag discrepancies rather than let them slide

Imagine you're assigned three different tests to run before the end of your shift, and one runs long. How do you handle the rest of your workload?

prioritization and time management in a fast-paced, multi-task lab environment
