Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about integration standards you've written. What did they cover and how did you get people to follow them?

What they are checking: Whether they can set standards that make automation maintainable across sites and actually get adopted.

Tell me about a time Operations and IT disagreed on an automation project. How did you resolve it?

What they are checking: Whether they can lead cross-functional groups with different goals toward one workable decision.

How do you grow the engineers on your team while keeping a demanding program on schedule?

What they are checking: Whether they develop people while delivering, which matters for a team that must scale with the company.

What would you do

You'll own the automation roadmap across fab, weld, paint and assembly. How would you decide what to automate first?

What they are checking: Whether they prioritize by safety, capacity and return rather than by what is technically interesting.

An automation project was commissioned but the line still isn't hitting its target rate months later. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they own sustained performance after startup instead of treating commissioning as the finish line.

How do you capture requirements from operators and supervisors who don't speak in engineering terms?

What they are checking: Whether they listen to the people who will run the equipment, since ignoring them is how automation fails.

About the work

Walk me through how you run vendor selection for a robotic weld cell.

What they are checking: Whether they evaluate vendors on support, integration and total cost, not just the quoted price.

How do you connect plant-floor automation to enterprise systems so leadership can see what's happening?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the data path from PLCs to business systems and the security issues along the way.

How do you validate that a new automation system is safe before you hand it to operations?

What they are checking: Whether they build safety risk assessment and validation into the process, not as a last-minute check.

How do you build a business case for an automation investment for a new facility?

What they are checking: Whether they can tie automation to capacity, labor and quality numbers that leaders can approve.
