About your past

Tell me about the chemical engineering project or co-op where you applied what you learned in class to a real process.

Why manufacturing, and why Decatur?

What they are checking: Whether they genuinely want plant-based work and a location like Decatur, which predicts whether they will stay.

What would you do

How do you decide when to make a recommendation versus gather more data?

About the work

Walk me through how you would do a mass balance on an evaporator concentrating a sugar solution.

What they are checking: Whether their core chemical engineering fundamentals are solid enough to apply on a corn wet milling plant.

A heat exchanger's performance has dropped over a few months. How would you figure out why?

What they are checking: Whether they think about fouling, flow changes and data trends before recommending a fix.

What does process safety management mean to you as a new engineer?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that changes to a process need hazard review and management of change, not just good intentions.
