Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about the hardest low-level bug you have tracked down. What tools did you use?
What they are checking: Whether they can use scopes, logic analyzers and debuggers patiently when the problem may live in hardware.
Tell me about a time you had to work closely with an electrical engineer to fix a design problem.
What they are checking: Whether they collaborate across the hardware and software line without blaming the other side.
What would you do
You work with global dispensing teams in other time zones. How do you keep a shared firmware project from drifting apart?
What they are checking: Whether they can coordinate code, reviews and decisions across distributed teams with limited overlap.
Hardware validation shows a signal that is out of spec, but the schedule is tight. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they escalate real hardware risk honestly instead of patching around it in firmware to hit a date.
About the work
Walk me through how you bring up a new board for the first time, from power-on to a working driver.
What they are checking: Whether they have hands-on board bring-up experience and a methodical order for isolating hardware from software problems.
You are writing a driver in C for a peripheral on a microcontroller. How do you handle interrupts and shared data safely?
What they are checking: Whether they understand volatile, critical sections and race conditions that cause rare, hard-to-reproduce field failures.
How do you decide how to split work into RTOS tasks, and how do you set their priorities?
What they are checking: Whether they can design a real-time system that meets deadlines and avoids priority inversion and starvation.
What goes into a board support package, and what makes one easy for the next engineer to use?
What they are checking: Whether they understand BSP structure and write it so application developers are not fighting the hardware layer.
How have you used Python or other scripts to speed up testing or validation of firmware?
What they are checking: Whether they automate repetitive hardware validation instead of relying on slow manual checks.
For a new IoT dispensing product, what would worry you most about connectivity and over-the-air updates?
What they are checking: Whether they think about security, failed updates and bricked devices before shipping connected equipment to customers.
How do you keep memory use and timing predictable in an embedded system with tight resources?
What they are checking: Whether they avoid dynamic allocation pitfalls and can reason about stack, heap and worst-case execution time.
