Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role builds brand awareness and positioning for a new university center on free inquiry and expression. What communications leadership have you done?

What they are checking: Whether they have led communications strategy at a senior level, since a new center needs someone who can build its voice from scratch.

What would you do

How do you build awareness for a center that is only just launched?

What they are checking: Whether they have a realistic plan for building awareness from zero, starting with key audiences, strong content and trusted partners.

The subject is free expression, which is contested. How do you communicate about it without the center becoming a political football?

What they are checking: Whether they can present free expression as a principle open to all views, so the center earns trust rather than being labeled partisan.

An event or a speaker generates criticism. How do you handle the communications side?

What they are checking: Whether they can respond to controversy calmly and consistently with the center's principles, since how the center reacts will define its reputation.

How do you work with faculty and university communications colleagues who have their own views and their own approvals?

What they are checking: Whether they can work within university approvals and respect faculty views, building cooperation rather than fighting the larger communications system.

You'd work alongside an events manager in the same center. How do communications and events reinforce each other?

What they are checking: Whether they see how communications and events support each other, since promotion fills events and events generate stories to share.

This reports into the center's leadership and sits alongside an events manager posted at the same time. What would you want to know about the center's programming and its funding before you took it?

What they are checking: Whether they would ask about programming plans and funding before joining, since a new center's stability shapes what communications can achieve.

About the work

Who are the audiences for a center like this, and do they want different things?

What they are checking: Whether they can identify distinct audiences like students, faculty, donors and the public, and tailor messages to what each group values.

You'd shape and execute strategy across channels. Which channel would you invest in first, and why?

What they are checking: Whether they can commit to one channel with a clear reason, showing strategic judgment rather than trying to do everything at once.

How would you measure whether the center's communications are working?

What they are checking: Whether they would measure reputation and engagement among key audiences, since positioning success is about perception rather than raw reach numbers.
