Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about an audit or program review finding you dealt with. What caused it, and how did you fix it for good?

What they are checking: Whether they trace findings to root causes and own the corrective plan instead of patching the symptom.

Tell me about a time you used data to change how aid was packaged or awarded. What was the goal, and what happened?

What they are checking: Whether they connect aid strategy to enrollment and retention outcomes, not just compliance.

How do you develop and hold accountable a team of advisors and processors who face heavy volume and upset families?

What they are checking: Whether they can lead a staff under pressure while keeping both accuracy and morale high.

Tell me about a time you had to tell a senior leader something about aid compliance they did not want to hear.

What they are checking: Whether they will hold the line on federal rules even under pressure from above.

What would you do

This role works closely with Student Accounts, Scholarships and the Student Financial Service Center. How would you coordinate across those offices so students get one clear answer?

What they are checking: Whether they can lead a coordinated student finance experience instead of defending their own office's turf.

A FAFSA processing delay pushes award notices back weeks during recruitment season. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can communicate honestly with students and leadership while protecting enrollment during a crisis outside their control.

What would you do in your first 90 days to understand where this office stands on compliance and service?

What they are checking: Whether they assess before changing things and know which risks to check first.

About the work

You would be the university's principal authority on Title IV. Walk me through how you keep an office in compliance when federal guidance changes mid-year.

What they are checking: Whether they have a real system for absorbing regulatory change rather than reacting after an audit finding.

How do you manage Return of Title IV funds calculations, and what controls do you put in place so they are timely and accurate?

What they are checking: Whether they know R2T4 is a common audit risk and treat its deadlines and math as non-negotiable.

How do you approach professional judgment requests, and how do you keep them fair and well documented?

What they are checking: Whether they balance compassion for individual students with consistency auditors can defend.

How do you handle verification and conflicting information so that you catch problems without creating barriers for low-income students?

What they are checking: Whether they can meet federal requirements while knowing the burden falls hardest on the students UWM serves most.
