Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time your team enabled a program that was stuck on a challenging target.

What they are checking: Whether their team's work has directly unblocked programs, which shows protein sciences contributing to real portfolio progress rather than just service.

Tell me about how you've built a high-performing scientific team.

What they are checking: Whether they have built a strong team through hiring, development and clear expectations, which is central to leading a scientific function.

How do you influence discovery strategy as a platform leader rather than a program owner?

What they are checking: Whether they can shape discovery decisions through expertise and relationships, since platform leaders rarely have direct authority over program choices.

What would you do

Biology and Structural Biology both want reagents urgently. How do you allocate the team's capacity?

What they are checking: Whether they can allocate limited capacity fairly using portfolio priorities and clear communication, rather than favoring the most insistent partner.

A program team blames poor protein quality for a failed assay. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they investigate with data rather than defending their team reflexively, which builds trust with programs when problems arise.

About the work

How would you build a Protein Sciences strategy that serves today's programs and also prepares for future targets?

What they are checking: Whether they can serve current programs reliably while investing in capabilities for harder future targets, since both matter to the portfolio.

Walk me through how you'd approach producing a difficult membrane protein target for a small molecule program.

What they are checking: Whether they have deep, practical expertise with hard protein targets, because membrane proteins often block small molecule programs from moving forward.

What metrics would you use to show Protein Sciences is delivering for the portfolio?

What they are checking: Whether they measure impact on programs, not just output counts, so leaders can see how protein sciences drives portfolio progress.

How do you think about protein reagents for peptide discovery programs versus small molecule programs?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how protein needs differ between peptide and small molecule programs, since the scope includes both modalities.

Where would automation or outsourcing make sense in a protein sciences group?

What they are checking: Whether they can judge where automation or outsourcing adds real value, freeing scientists for work that needs their expertise.

What new technologies in protein production or characterization are you excited about?

What they are checking: Whether they stay current on new methods and can explain why they matter, which shows they will keep the function moving forward.
