Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about leading a council of volunteers. How did you keep them focused?

What they are checking: Whether they can keep volunteer councils focused on clear goals, since volunteers have day jobs and lose momentum without direction and progress.

Tell me about a time you set direction and then did the hands-on work yourself.

What they are checking: Whether they can both set strategy and roll up their sleeves to deliver it, since this role needs someone comfortable doing both.

Tell me about a stakeholder plan you built and how it changed during execution.

What they are checking: Whether they plan stakeholder engagement deliberately and adjust as they learn, since support for this work changes over the course of execution.

What would you do

A VP is skeptical that this work drives business results. How do you approach that conversation?

What they are checking: Whether they can engage a skeptical leader with evidence and business language, rather than defensiveness, to build real support for the work.

How do you partner with HR business partners and centers of excellence without duplicating work?

What they are checking: Whether they can coordinate with HR and centers of excellence clearly, so efforts are complementary and employees do not see duplicate programs.

About the work

How would you build an EEDI strategy for a commercial function in your first six months?

What they are checking: Whether they can build a strategy grounded in the business's real goals and data, rather than a generic program disconnected from commercial results.

How do you measure whether an EEDI strategy is working?

What they are checking: Whether they define meaningful measures beyond participation counts, so leaders can see whether the strategy is actually changing outcomes.

How would you adapt an approach that works in the US for a global organization?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that norms and laws differ across countries, so programs must be adapted thoughtfully rather than copied from the US.

How do you keep up with changes in law and practice that affect this work?

What they are checking: Whether they track legal and practice changes closely, because this area has shifted significantly and missteps carry real legal and reputational risk.

How would you build a communication plan for a new initiative across a large commercial team?

What they are checking: Whether they can plan clear, well-timed communication for a large commercial audience, so the message lands consistently across many teams and managers.

The full job description

As published by AbbVie.

Purpose This role leads the design and execution of Equity, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EEDI) strategies for one of AbbVie's key functions. Reporting to the Director, Programs and Business Partnerships, this individual serves as a strategic driver and takes a hands-on approach — shaping the vision and rolling up their sleeves to make it real. The role partners closely with VP-level leaders, functional EEDI councils, Business HR (BHR), and HR Centers of Excellence (COEs) to deliver measurable business and talent outcomes. The ideal candidate brings a demonstrated track record of driving organizational impact at scale — someone who combines forward-thinking strategy with a bias for action, and who is equally comfortable setting direction and doing the work. This person operates with both a grounding in proven approaches and a commitment to evolving practices that serve our global, diverse organization. Responsibilities • Own EEDI functional strategy: Partner with the business to develop the EEDI strategy for assigned function. Lead strategy execution, including roadmap implementation, stakeholder management, communication plans, and achievement of clear measures of success. • Lead and align EEDI councils: Direct the work of EEDI councils by establishing clear goals, aligned priorities, and effective operating models that connect directly to business and EEDI strategy. Facilitate council effectiveness with hands-on engagement through active leadership. • Co-design and manage EEDI programs: Co-design, deliver, and manage EEDI programs that are intentionally inclusive and accessible to all employees. Take ownership of program outcomes, with accountability for adoption and measurable outcomes. • Drive cross-functional alignment: Partner with EEDI leads, BHR and COEs to integrate EEDI principles into foundational people processes and to collaboratively advance new strategies and initiatives — ensuring consistency and coherence across the enterprise. • Embed systemic change in talent processes: Apply change management methodologies to deliver year-over-year progress on key EEDI metrics and overall talent metrics. Ensure aligned and systemic changes across functions, sustained efforts over one-time initiatives. • Serve as a strategic advisor: Advise BHR and COEs on practical, evidence-based ways to embed EEDI into all people and business processes. Provide thought leadership that shapes the HR practices and promotes equitable decision-making — with both global perspective and local sensitivity. • Research and benchmark: Stay up to date on ongoing research and external benchmarking to inform best practices and to identify new opportunities for building a globally inclusive workforce. • Translate data into action: Use AI, workforce data and analytics to identify talent opportunities, assess initiative effectiveness, and establish KPIs that demonstrate measurable business impact. Be a practitioner who understands data and interprets what it means. • Uphold governance standards: Ensure consistent adherence to governance processes and guidelines across all EEDI programming and initiatives. Education and Experience • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Advanced degree or EEDI Certification preferred. • Minimum 8+ years of related EEDI work experience; 5+ years of leadership or high-level consulting roles. • Experience in translating external and internal trends into innovative practices. • Proven track record of facilitating company-level initiatives with multiple stakeholders. • A deep understanding of how to promote EEDI within a large, complex, multi-national organization. • Experience in senior business partnering and advisory roles; ability to build collaborative, business-focused relationships with senior HR and business leaders. • Strong consulting skills, project planning, management and review, with an ability to roll up sleeves to demonstrate initiative and results-orientation, with a focus on service. • Strong written and verbal communication skills, presentation skills, and facilitation skills. • A proactive, resourceful and self-motivated approach to their work.
