Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a process improvement that mattered more than the technology change attached to it.

What they are checking: Whether they understand that fixing the underlying process often matters more than the new system, which separates business partners from tool installers.

You manage senior managers and directors. How is managing managers different from managing individual contributors?

What they are checking: Whether they know managing managers means setting direction and growing leaders, not solving every problem themselves as they did earlier in their career.

Describe influencing a decision in a domain where you were not the expert.

What they are checking: Whether they can influence decisions outside their expertise by listening, learning quickly and earning credibility, since this role spans many corporate functions.

How do you develop a director who reports to you and is already good at their job?

What they are checking: Developing senior people, which is harder than developing junior ones.

This is a director role in Business Technology Solutions at North Chicago covering more than one technology and functional area. What do you want to know about which corporate functions are in scope and the size of the team?

What they are checking: Whether they ask clarifying questions about scope and team size before committing, since a broad mandate can hide very different jobs underneath.

What would you do

How do you become a credible partner to a functional leader who sees technology as a service desk?

What they are checking: Whether they can move a skeptical functional leader from seeing IT as order-taking to treating technology as a real business partner.

Two functions want competing things from the same platform. How do you resolve that?

What they are checking: Whether they can weigh competing needs fairly and make a clear call, since a shared platform cannot serve every function's wishes at once.

How do you know a technology strategy is working a year in?

What they are checking: Whether they define early signs of progress for long-term work, because strategies without measures drift without anyone noticing until it is too late.

About the work

This builds technology strategy across several corporate functions at once. How do you set a two to three year strategy when each function wants something different?

What they are checking: Multi-function strategy development, which this posting makes the first objective.

How do you decide what belongs in a strategy and what is really just a project list?

What they are checking: Whether they think in terms of choices and direction rather than a list of projects, because a strategy should also say what not to do.
