Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role leads governance and operational excellence for a commercial technology project and program portfolio. Walk me through running a portfolio governance function.

What they are checking: Whether they have actually run portfolio governance at this scale, setting the forums, criteria and cadence, rather than only participating in it.

How do you work with delivery leaders who see you as overhead?

What they are checking: Whether they can earn the trust of delivery leaders by being useful to them, because governance only works with their willing cooperation.

What would you do

You'd establish frameworks to evaluate, prioritize and monitor the portfolio against enterprise priorities. How do you prioritize projects that each have a senior sponsor?

What they are checking: Whether they can prioritize transparently using clear criteria when every project has a senior champion, which is the hardest part of portfolio work.

How do you get honest status from project teams rather than green until it is red?

What they are checking: Whether they can create conditions where teams report problems early, because a portfolio office is only useful if its information is honest.

A project is failing and its sponsor wants to keep going. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they will raise hard evidence and push for a stop or reset decision, even when a powerful sponsor wants to continue.

How do you introduce governance without making delivery slower?

What they are checking: Whether they design governance lightly enough that teams see value in it, because heavy process is the fastest way to lose delivery leaders' cooperation.

This is based at Mettawa within commercial technology. What would you want to know about the portfolio and the current governance before you took it?

What they are checking: Whether they ask sharp questions about what they would inherit before accepting, which shows the judgment they would bring to the portfolio itself.

About the work

You'd develop enterprise dashboards and executive reporting on delivery, progress and risks. What makes a portfolio dashboard useful rather than decorative?

What they are checking: Whether they know a dashboard should drive decisions about risk and investment, not just display colorful status that nobody acts on.

What does operational excellence actually mean for a technology delivery organization?

What they are checking: Whether they can turn a vague phrase into specific practices and measures, which shows they understand what the job will actually require day to day.

How do you measure whether the portfolio is delivering value rather than just completing projects?

What they are checking: Whether they measure business outcomes rather than on-time delivery alone, since completed projects that change nothing are still wasted investment.
