Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This job is travel-heavy, nationwide, for weeks at a time. Tell me about a stretch where you lived on the road and how you kept your work quality up.

What they are checking: Whether they truly understand the travel load and have a proven way to stay sharp and reliable while away from home.

Tell me about a time you troubleshot an electrical fault on site with the customer watching and the clock running.

What they are checking: Whether they stay methodical and keep the customer informed when an outage or delay is costing real money.

How do you document a commissioning job so the next tech or the customer can pick it up without calling you?

What they are checking: Whether they see clear service reports as part of the work, since ABB standard processes depend on good records.

Tell me about a time you mentored a less experienced technician in the field.

What they are checking: Whether they can grow other techs, which is part of what separates a senior field role from a standard one.

What would you do

You arrive on site and the general contractor wants you to energize equipment, but the lockout and the paperwork are not in order. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they hold the safety line under schedule pressure, since data center builds move fast and shortcuts injure people.

A data center customer asks you to change a setting that differs from the approved work instructions. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they respect ABB work instructions and change control while still treating the customer request seriously and escalating it.

The schedule slips because another trade is late, and the customer blames you. How do you respond?

What they are checking: Whether they can protect the relationship and ABB's reputation without arguing, while still getting the facts on record.

About the work

Walk me through how you start up and commission a low-voltage switchgear lineup in a new data center before it carries load.

What they are checking: Whether they follow a disciplined commissioning sequence, from inspection and insulation testing to energizing, instead of rushing to power.

How do you test and set protective relays or trip units on circuit breakers during commissioning?

What they are checking: Whether they understand breaker protection settings well enough to verify coordination rather than just confirming a device turns on.

What arc flash and NFPA 70E practices do you follow before working on energized or potentially energized gear?

What they are checking: Whether electrical safety is a habit they can explain in detail, which matters most for a senior tech who sets the example.
