About your past

Tell me about a time a frightened or very ill patient made it hard to get a usable scan. How did you handle it?

What they are checking: Compassion and practical coaching for patients who may be in pain, anxious or newly diagnosed.

Tell me about a time you had to work with a radiologist to adjust a protocol mid-exam.

What they are checking: Communication with physicians and the judgment to ask for guidance when a scan needs changing.

What would you do

You split time between downtown Chicago and a 12-hour shift in Zion. How would you handle differences in equipment or workflow between sites?

What they are checking: Adaptability across two locations with different scanners, teams and pace on a part-time schedule.

You notice the order does not match what the patient tells you about why they are here. What do you do?

What they are checking: Willingness to stop and verify with the ordering provider instead of scanning the wrong study.

How do you stay efficient on a long shift with a full schedule without cutting corners on patient ID and safety checks?

What they are checking: Balance between throughput and safety habits like two-identifier checks that cannot be skipped.

About the work

Walk me through how you screen a patient before a contrast-enhanced CT, especially an oncology patient on active treatment.

What they are checking: Careful screening for kidney function, allergies and prior reactions in patients who often have fragile health.

A patient starts showing signs of a contrast reaction right after injection. What do you do in the first minute?

What they are checking: Fast recognition and response to a reaction, including when to call for help and what to have ready.

How do you keep radiation dose as low as reasonably achievable for cancer patients who are scanned again and again?

What they are checking: Understanding of ALARA and protocol choices for patients who build up dose over many surveillance scans.

What do you check on a power injector and IV line before you inject contrast?

What they are checking: Attention to extravasation risk and line patency, which prevents a common and painful injury.

What scanner platforms and post-processing tasks have you done, such as reconstructions or CT-guided procedures?

What they are checking: Range of hands-on CT experience and how quickly they can work independently on a part-time basis.
