Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to create or clean up room and equipment records in a database. What mistakes did you watch out for?

attention to detail and awareness of how bad data propagates through a facilities database

Have you ever built or maintained a standards manual or documentation that other people had to follow? How did you make sure people actually used it?

ability to create documentation that sticks, since this role owns the CAD/CAFM standards manual

Tell me about a time you had to explain a technical process, like a database structure or a drawing convention, to someone without a technical background.

communication skill relevant to training associates and coordinating with onsite facilities staff

Describe a situation where you had conflicting priorities, maybe a deadline for one facility's drawings while dealing with an urgent request elsewhere. How did you decide what came first?

prioritization skill needed when juggling multiple sites and stakeholders independently

Technical

Walk me through how you would prepare an architectural CAD file so it's ready to be linked into a CAFM system like Archibus.

whether the candidate actually understands the CAD-to-CAFM data pipeline, not just AutoCAD drafting

What's the difference between a CAFM system and a CMMS, and how do you see them working together in a hospital setting?

real understanding of facilities systems versus just having heard the acronyms

Explain how you'd create a space polyline and why the methodology matters for accurate square footage reporting.

hands-on familiarity with space management concepts, not just general CAD skill

How comfortable are you working with relational database concepts, importing and manipulating data in spreadsheets to feed into a CAFM system?

actual data manipulation skill beyond surface-level Excel use, since Excel transition documents are part of the job

Situational

Say you get a set of architectural drawings from a third-party design firm and their layering doesn't match our CAD/CAFM standards. What do you do?

how they handle inconsistent inputs and whether they'd enforce or negotiate standards with outside vendors

You show up at a hospital site to redline drawings and the building doesn't match anything on the existing plans. Walk me through what you do from arrival to getting the update into AutoCAD.

whether they grasp the full field-to-office workflow, including badging, access, and turning redlines into finished drawings

We're told new hires need to be doing AutoCAD drawing updates within their first two weeks. How would you get yourself up to speed that fast on an unfamiliar facility's drawings and standards?

realistic self-assessment of ramp-up speed and learning approach under a tight timeline

This role requires regular travel to sites near Chicago and Milwaukee, with expansion planned to Georgia and Charlotte. How do you think about managing a travel-heavy schedule alongside deadline-driven drafting work?

honest fit with the travel demands and time management across disconnected site visits

If you noticed the CAFM system was missing functionality that would make your job or the department's job easier, how would you go about raising that and pushing for it?

initiative and whether they see themselves as a passive user or someone who improves the system
