Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a customer story you uncovered and wrote from scratch. How did you find it, and what did you do to make it feel real instead of generic marketing copy?

whether the candidate can actually source and shape authentic narrative rather than just polish existing quotes

Tell me about a time you had to switch between a technical topic and a more human, emotional story in the same week. How did you adjust your writing voice for each?

range and control across tone, since the role spans public safety and commercial enterprise content

Give me an example of a pitch that got rejected or ignored. What did you learn from the reporter's response, or lack of one, and what did you change?

resilience and whether they treat media relations as a feedback loop rather than a one-shot activity

Describe a time you had to pull information out of a sales, product, or engineering team member who wasn't naturally forthcoming, to build a story or briefing doc.

cross-functional collaboration skills and persistence in extracting usable content from non-writers

Tell me about a piece of writing you were proud of that got significantly cut or changed by an editor or executive. How did you handle it?

ego control and adaptability when their writing gets reworked by stakeholders

Tell me about a time you had to learn a new market or product area quickly to write about it credibly. How did you get up to speed?

self-directed learning and comfort operating with incomplete subject-matter expertise

Technical

How do you build a media list for a story that could go to regional press, tech trade outlets, or public safety trade press, and how do you decide who gets pitched first?

practical fluency with media relations mechanics, not just theory

What generative AI or media intelligence tools have you actually used day to day, and where did they save you real time versus where they created more work checking their output?

honest, hands-on AI tool experience versus buzzword familiarity

How would you set up a system to track daily media coverage and sentiment for a company operating across both public safety and commercial markets, and what would you actually report up to leadership versus just log?

whether they can design a measurement workflow, not just execute someone else's template

What's a story about first responders, utility workers, or another frontline audience that you think is genuinely hard to tell well, and how would you approach it?

genuine interest and skill in the specific storytelling territory this company operates in, not generic PR enthusiasm

Situational

Say you're given a press release draft the morning of a product launch and you find out a key spokesperson quote doesn't match the approved messaging. What do you do in the next hour?

judgment under time pressure and understanding of approval chains in corporate comms

Tell me about a week where you had three deadlines colliding, maybe a trade show, a media pitch, and a leadership request. How did you triage?

ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment

Imagine you're staffing media at a regional trade show and a journalist shows up wanting an unplanned interview with a spokesperson who's double-booked. What do you do on the spot?

composure and improvisation during live event logistics
