Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you kept a business customer who was ready to take their account somewhere else.
What they are checking: Whether they treat retention as real work, since this role is measured on keeping and growing commercial accounts, not one-time sales.
When you sell to a professional technician, what changes about how you talk to them compared to a walk-in customer?
What they are checking: Whether they respect a technician's time and knowledge and keep the conversation fast, accurate and focused on what the shop needs.
Tell me about a time you had to work with a manager on how to develop someone who was struggling.
What they are checking: Whether they can partner with the GM on coaching instead of going around them or leaving it all to them.
What parts or vehicle systems do you know best, and where are you still learning?
What they are checking: Whether they are honest about the limits of their knowledge, since overconfidence at a commercial counter leads to wrong parts.
Tell me about a time you had to coach someone on your team who was making mistakes at the counter.
What they are checking: Whether they can give direct, respectful correction, since they share supervision with the GM without owning the final call.
What would you do
You have three delivery orders ready, one driver in the store, and a shop calling to ask where its parts are. How do you decide what goes out first?
What they are checking: Whether they can dispatch drivers with a plan, weighing distance, urgency and account value instead of going in the order tickets printed.
If you started at our Waukesha store, how would you spend your first month learning who the commercial customers are and what they need?
What they are checking: Whether they have a plan to learn the local accounts quickly, because the relationships are the job and they take time to earn.
About the work
A shop calls needing a part you don't have on the shelf, and they need the car out today. Walk me through every place you'd look before you tell them no.
What they are checking: Whether they actually know the sourcing ladder of special order, FDO and second source, because a commercial customer remembers the one time you said no.
How do you handle commercial returns so they get processed correctly and don't pile up in the back room?
What they are checking: Whether they treat returns and warranty paperwork as a discipline, since mistakes there turn into lost credit and shrink.
How do you make sure the part you hand a shop is the right one when the vehicle has two or three possible options by production date or engine code?
What they are checking: Whether they verify fitment with a VIN and the right questions, because wrong parts on commercial orders cost a driver run both ways.
What does a good commercial stocking program look like to you, and how would you tell if one in a customer's shop isn't working?
What they are checking: Whether they understand that stocking programs keep fast movers in the bay and lock in the account, and that they need upkeep.
