Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you kept a business customer who was ready to take their account somewhere else.
What they are checking: Whether they treat retention as real work, since this role is measured on keeping and growing commercial accounts, not one-time sales.
How would you find new commercial customers, like independent repair shops or fleets, that aren't buying from us yet?
What they are checking: Whether they will go out and grow the business on their own initiative, not just wait for the phone to ring.
Tell me about a time you went past what was expected to get a customer what they needed.
What they are checking: Whether they have a real story of service effort, which is what the GAS2 selling experience is meant to deliver to commercial customers.
What would you do
You have three delivery orders ready, one driver in the store, and a shop calling to ask where its parts are. How do you decide what goes out first?
What they are checking: Whether they can dispatch drivers with a plan, weighing distance, urgency and account value instead of going in the order tickets printed.
A shop in Pontiac has been buying from a competitor for years. What would it take for you to win even part of their business?
What they are checking: Whether they understand that winning a pro account comes from speed, accuracy and follow-through, not just price.
A long-time commercial account is sixty days past due on its credit account, and the owner just called in a big order. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they can protect the store's money on a credit account without burning a relationship that took years to build.
If you started at our Pontiac store, how would you spend your first month learning who the commercial customers are and what they need?
What they are checking: Whether they have a plan to learn the local accounts quickly, because the relationships are the job and they take time to earn.
About the work
A shop calls needing a part you don't have on the shelf, and they need the car out today. Walk me through every place you'd look before you tell them no.
What they are checking: Whether they actually know the sourcing ladder of special order, FDO and second source, because a commercial customer remembers the one time you said no.
How do you keep track of which commercial accounts are buying less than they used to?
What they are checking: Whether they watch account trends on purpose, since catching a slipping customer early is the core of retention.
What would you look at to decide whether we need a second driver on the schedule during certain hours?
What they are checking: Whether they can think about driver coverage using order volume and delivery times, which is a call they make with the GM.
A technician tells you the car is cranking but not starting, and he wants a fuel pump. What would you ask him before you pull one?
What they are checking: Whether they have the system knowledge to catch a likely misdiagnosis, which saves the shop a comeback and saves the store a return.
Walk me through how you'd go about finding a reliable second source supplier in this area, and how you'd keep that relationship useful.
What they are checking: Whether they see second sourcing as a network they build ahead of time instead of a scramble when a part is out.
