Likely interview questions for this role

About your past

This is a 24-month rotation through Commercial Banking and Wealth Management. Why do you want both, rather than picking one now?

What they are checking: Whether they see the value in understanding the whole client relationship before choosing a path.

Tell me about a time you had to learn something completely new very quickly. How did you get up to speed?

What they are checking: Whether they can handle a fast rotation where each stop has new skills and new people.

Busey describes its culture as relationship focused. What does a strong client relationship look like to you?

What they are checking: Whether they understand long-term trust and holistic advice rather than one-time transactions.

Tell me about a time you got critical feedback. What did you change afterward?

What they are checking: Whether they can take coaching, which is central to a development program.

Tell me about a team project where you had to persuade others to go with your idea. How did you do it?

What they are checking: Whether they can influence with reasoning and listening, a skill they will need across business lines.

What would you do

You will also do Financial Planning work. How would you start a planning conversation with a family who just sold a business?

What they are checking: Whether they lead with questions about goals before jumping to products or numbers.

You will be based in Champaign with exposure to senior leaders. How would you make the most of that access?

What they are checking: Whether they will ask good questions and seek feedback without wasting busy leaders' time.

A commercial client's revenue dropped 20 percent last year but they want to expand their credit line. How would you think through that request?

What they are checking: Whether they dig into why revenue fell and the client's plan instead of saying yes or no right away.

About the work

You will do Credit Analyst work. Walk me through how you would decide whether a small business can repay a loan.

What they are checking: Whether they know the basics of cash flow, debt service coverage and collateral, not just definitions.

What financial statement would you look at first to judge a business's health, and why?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement connect.

How do interest rate changes affect a bank's commercial lending and its wealth clients?

What they are checking: Whether they have a basic picture of how rates move through a bank's business and its clients' portfolios.
