Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a program that crashed a machine or scrapped a part. What happened, and what did you change?

What they are checking: Whether they own mistakes and build checks to prevent repeats, which is how trust is earned on the floor.

Tell me about a time you worked with engineering to change a design so it was easier to make.

What they are checking: Whether they give useful feedback on manufacturability and work well with engineers.

What would you do

A machinist tells you your program is running slow and they think they can do it better. How do you respond?

What they are checking: Whether they listen to operators and use their floor knowledge instead of defending their program out of pride.

How would you handle a rush job on a part material you have rarely machined, like a hard alloy or a soft bearing material?

What they are checking: Whether they research and test carefully under pressure instead of guessing on unfamiliar material.

About the work

What CAM software have you programmed in, and on what machines, like mills, lathes or multi-axis?

What they are checking: Whether their CAM and machine experience lines up with the bearing and seal parts made in a precision shop.

Walk me through how you program a new part from a print, from reviewing the drawing to proving out the first piece.

What they are checking: Whether they follow a careful process that catches problems before metal is cut and scrap is made.

How do you read and apply GD&T callouts when you choose your setups and tooling?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how datums and tolerances drive fixturing and operations, not just the part geometry.

How do you cut cycle time on a part without hurting tool life or surface finish?

What they are checking: Whether they understand speeds, feeds, toolpaths and the tradeoffs that save real money on repeat jobs.

How do you manage program revisions so the floor always runs the right version?

What they are checking: Whether they control documents carefully, since running an old program can scrap expensive parts.

What do you check when a first article comes back out of tolerance?

What they are checking: Whether they troubleshoot in a logical order, separating program, setup, tool and machine causes.
