Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you set or changed a best practice for your team. How did you get people to follow it?

What they are checking: Whether they can influence how others work, since the role helps define best practices, not just follow them.

Tell me about an outage you helped resolve. What was your part, and what changed afterward?

What they are checking: Ownership during an incident and whether they follow through on the fix after things calm down.

How do you explain an infrastructure tradeoff, like cost against availability, to a planning meeting full of non-engineers?

What they are checking: Plain-language communication in the collaborative planning meetings the posting describes.

What would you do

A deployment went fine in test and broke in production. How do you work out why?

What they are checking: A methodical approach to comparing environments instead of rolling back and hoping.

How do you balance general IT support requests against planned provisioning work when both are urgent?

What they are checking: Prioritizing openly so planned work does not quietly slip behind a stream of interruptions.

An application team wants admin rights in production to move faster. How do you respond?

What they are checking: Holding to least privilege while still finding a way to help the team get its work done.

About the work

Walk me through how you would provision infrastructure for a new application in the SIOP suite from request to running in production.

What they are checking: Whether they can describe the full path, including access, networking and handoff, not just spinning up a server.

What infrastructure as code tools have you used, and how did you keep environments from drifting apart?

What they are checking: Discipline about repeatable builds, which is what keeps support predictable across many environments.

This work requires U.S. citizenship because of program data. How does that change the way you think about access and logging in the cloud?

What they are checking: Awareness that controlled data needs tight identity, access and audit controls built into the environment.

How do you monitor the health of applications you deployed so you hear about problems before users do?

What they are checking: Whether they build alerting and visibility in from the start rather than adding it after a complaint.
