Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about your NICU experience. What levels of acuity and what kinds of babies did you care for?

What they are checking: Whether they have the neonatal depth that NICU nurses need to trust them as a resource.

Tell me about a quality project you led that made care safer.

What they are checking: Whether they have actually led change and measured the result, not just suggested ideas.

What would you do

A new nurse is struggling with feeding protocols and calculating drips for premature babies. How would you help?

What they are checking: Whether they coach patiently and check skill before letting the nurse work alone.

Experienced NICU nurses resist a new evidence-based practice. How do you bring them along?

What they are checking: Building buy-in through evidence and listening, which decides whether a change lasts.

This is a 0.8 FTE day position with some flexibility. How would you make sure night staff get the same education?

What they are checking: Whether they plan for fairness across shifts with limited hours of their own.

About the work

How would you keep NRP skills sharp for staff who rarely see a full resuscitation?

What they are checking: Whether they use regular mock codes and practice, since rare skills fade quickly.

How do you decide what the NICU staff most needs to learn this year?

What they are checking: Using data from incidents, audits and staff input to focus education where it matters most.

How would you teach staff to support parents who are scared and overwhelmed in the NICU?

What they are checking: Whether they see family-centered care as a skill that can be taught, not just a personality trait.

How do you know whether an education program actually changed care at the bedside?

What they are checking: Whether they track outcomes and observe practice rather than only counting attendance.

How do you stay current with neonatal research and decide what is ready to bring to the unit?

What they are checking: Whether they judge evidence carefully before changing practice for very fragile patients.
