Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

This role leads an organization connecting universities, national laboratories and industry partners in quantum science and engineering. Walk me through leading a partnership organization.

What they are checking: Leadership of a consortium, which is different from leading a company

You'd build a discovery-to-deployment ecosystem spanning research, commercialization and talent. Which of those three is your strongest, and which would you need to build a team around?

What they are checking: Whether they know honestly where their strengths lie across research, commercialization and talent, and would hire to cover their gaps.

Tell me about a time you had to bring rival organizations to one table.

What they are checking: Whether they have actually brought competing organizations together, because convening rivals is the daily work of leading this consortium.

What would you do

Member institutions have their own priorities and their own funding. How do you get them to act together?

What they are checking: Whether they can align independent institutions around shared goals, since a consortium only works when members see a reason to cooperate.

How do you build a talent pipeline for a field where the people do not exist yet in numbers?

What they are checking: Whether they can create talent from training programs and partnerships, because the quantum workforce must be built rather than recruited.

How would you decide what this organization should not do?

What they are checking: Whether they can say no to attractive ideas to stay focused, since a young organization that does everything usually does nothing well.

This sits within the molecular engineering school at the University. What would you want to know about the existing membership and its funding before you took it?

What they are checking: Whether they would examine membership commitments and funding stability first, which shows serious judgment before taking on a chief executive role.

About the work

What is your read on where quantum technology actually is commercially right now?

What they are checking: Real technical and market judgment in a field full of claims

How do you work with national laboratories, whose constraints differ from a university's?

What they are checking: Whether they understand national labs' security, funding and approval constraints, which shape how fast any joint work can actually move.

Where does the funding for something like this come from, and how would you grow it?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the mix of member dues, government grants and industry support, and have a realistic plan for growing it.
