Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you provided spiritual care to a patient or family whose faith tradition was very different from your own.

whether the candidate practices genuine cross-cultural humility rather than imposing their own tradition

Tell me about a code or a sudden death you responded to. What did you actually do in the first few minutes?

composure and concrete crisis-response skill, not theoretical knowledge of grief support

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a physician or care team member about a patient's spiritual or ethical needs. How did you handle it?

ability to hold ground respectfully within a multidisciplinary team without becoming combative

Describe a time your own faith group's endorsement or expectations created tension with something the hospital needed from you. How did you resolve it?

how the candidate manages the dual accountability of ecclesiastical endorsement and institutional policy

Tell me about the hardest on-call night you've had, maybe covering more than one site. How did you manage your energy and your judgment by the end of it?

realistic self-awareness about sustaining quality care through overnight and weekend rotations

What have you noticed changes about spiritual assessment when you move from bedside visits to a screen, and what do you do to compensate for what's lost?

reflective awareness of the limits of tele-chaplaincy and concrete adaptations rather than assuming it's identical to in-person care

Technical

How many units of CPE have you completed, and where are you in the process toward board certification with APC, BCCI, NACC, or NAJC?

whether the candidate meets the hard credentialing requirements and understands the certification timeline

How do you keep a virtual spiritual care encounter private and confidential when you're not in a controlled hospital room?

understanding of privacy and documentation standards applied to telehealth

What does staying in good standing with your faith group actually involve for you day to day, outside of this job?

verifies the ongoing endorsement requirement is a lived commitment, not a one-time credential

Situational

Walk me through how you would run a spiritual care visit over video with a patient who is dying, when you can't be in the room with them.

ability to establish real presence and therapeutic connection in a virtual format, not just going through the motions

Say a family is video-calling in from out of state right after a loved one has died, and the connection keeps dropping. What do you do?

problem-solving under pressure when technology fails during an emotionally critical moment

You've been asked to mentor a CPE student who is struggling to set boundaries with patients. How would you approach that conversation?

teaching and supervisory ability, since the role includes mentoring students and giving feedback to the CPE supervisor

A team member comes to you privately, overwhelmed after a difficult case, and asks for support but doesn't want it to become a formal referral. What do you do?

judgment about scope, confidentiality, and when to escalate versus provide informal support to staff

How would you help a patient's family understand a procedure like withdrawal of care, in a way that's honest but still gives them room for hope or peace?

skill in translating clinical realities into compassionate, faith-sensitive language
