Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you refused to move a load or kept a truck parked because something wasn't safe. How did that conversation go?

What they are checking: Whether they will hold a safety line under pressure from dispatch or a customer, and stay professional while doing it.

What's the most serious incident or near miss you've had behind the wheel, and what did you change afterward?

What they are checking: Whether they own mistakes honestly and learn from them, which matters more than a perfect record they won't explain.

This is a local, home-daily schedule with a lot of stops and transfers. What do you like about local work compared with over-the-road, and what wears on you?

What they are checking: Whether the pace of short-haul tanker work fits them, so they stay past the first few months.

What would you do

You're transferring product at a customer site and you notice a small drip at a hose connection. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they stop the transfer and follow spill steps instead of finishing first, which protects people, the site and the company.

The customer wants you to pump faster because they're behind schedule, but that's above the rate you're comfortable with. How do you handle that?

What they are checking: Whether they can stay polite and helpful with customers while still running the equipment within safe limits.

How do you keep yourself and the public safe when you're hooking up or pumping in a tight spot with traffic or workers nearby?

What they are checking: Whether they set up a safe work zone and stay aware of others, not just their own truck and hoses.

About the work

This job means hauling and pumping hazardous petroleum-based materials around the Hodgkins area. Walk me through how you handle a load like that from pre-trip to final paperwork.

What they are checking: Whether they treat hazmat hauling as a full routine with checks at every step, not just driving from point A to B.

What do you check on a tanker during your pre-trip that you wouldn't bother with on a dry van?

What they are checking: Whether they know tanker-specific risks like valves, vents, hose fittings and leaks that cause spills and violations.

Tell me about your experience driving a manual transmission with a loaded tanker. How does liquid surge change the way you shift, brake and take turns?

What they are checking: Whether they truly drive manual tankers or just hold the license, since surge causes rollovers with careless drivers.

Which hazmat endorsements and DOT rules do you work under day to day, and how do you keep your logs and shipping papers right?

What they are checking: Whether their compliance knowledge is current and practical, because one paperwork gap can put a truck out of service.
