Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Walk me through your driving record for the last three to five years. Anything on it we should talk about?

What they are checking: Whether they are upfront about their record, since a clean record is a hard requirement and surprises later end the hire.

This is a night shift out of DeForest. How have you handled night driving before, and how do you stay alert through the back half of a shift?

What they are checking: Whether they have a real fatigue plan for nights rather than assuming they will be fine.

This role comes with relocation to the Madison area. What is drawing you to make that move, and what does your timeline look like?

What they are checking: Whether the move is realistic and thought through, since a relocated driver who leaves fast is a costly loss.

Tell me about a time you had to make a safety call that slowed you down, like weather or a load that did not feel right.

What they are checking: Whether they put safety ahead of the clock when the two conflict, even with nobody watching.

What would you do

You will be backing a Class A rig into tight docks behind grocery stores and restaurants, often in the dark. How do you approach a stop you have never seen before?

What they are checking: Whether they get out and look, use a spotter when needed and slow down instead of guessing in tight spaces.

You notice the truck pulling a little and a new noise from the brakes halfway through the route. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they report and act on maintenance warning signs rather than pushing through to finish the route.

The contact at a restaurant is upset because you showed up later than usual and they need the area cleared. How do you handle that conversation?

What they are checking: Whether they stay calm and courteous with customers, since the driver is often the only face of the company they see.

Some of what we pick up is used cooking oil and food byproducts that can be messy and smell. How do you feel about that part of the work?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the nature of rendering and recycling loads and will not quit after the first week.

About the work

Part of the job is collecting and loading product and raw materials at the customer site. What kind of hands-on loading have you done, and how do you handle heavy or awkward items safely?

What they are checking: Whether they can do the physical side of the route, including lifting 50 pounds often and moving 400-pound items with the right equipment.

Talk me through your pre-trip inspection. What do you check, in what order?

What they are checking: Whether they have a real routine they follow every time, which is how problems get caught before the road.

How do you keep your logs and hours of service clean when a day runs long because of delays at stops?

What they are checking: Whether they know the hours rules and would stop legally rather than fudge a log to finish.
